Have A Cigar

We've all heard the song Have a Cigar, but do we all know that it is neither Waters or Gilmour on vocals? Well, I am sure the Pink Floyd Veteran's know this, but for us new begginers, it came to me as a shock that Roy Harper, not a member from Pink Floyd sings on Have a Cigar, what do you think of this, and for those of you who know the full story, WHY is this?

Roger had strained his vocal cords while recording the vocals to 'Shine on You Crazy Diamond'. According to Rog, Dave didn't feel like doing the vocals, so they grabbed Roy Harper - who was in Abbey Road at the same time as them, working on his album in another studio - and asked him to do the vocals. He apparently accepted.

Roger later regretted doing that, saying that "it just wasen't us anymore". This fits in with the Floyd's vision of Wish You Were Here (the album) being about abandonment and absence. The songs were on that subject, and that's how the band felt at the time, too - having given most of their creative juices to DSOTM and the success following it.

I wonder what they did on the Wish You Were Here tour!:o

Roy Harper sang it once with PF, live - at the Knebworth Festival, in 1975.

I believe Dave sang it all the other times.

I imagine Dave sang it on the tour. That's a good question, though, because it was too high for Dave or Roger, which is part of the reason Roy sang it in the studio. Roy also changed some of the words on the song.
Roy Harper was pretty tight with the band; they knew each other well. In fact, I think Roy often referred to himself as "the fifth Floyd".

Oddly enuf, according to Nick Shaffner, the hotel wrecking scene in The Wall film was based on a true Roy Harper debacle.

What happened then? In that debacle? I am curous.

At the Knebworth show, in 1975 (incidentally, the only time he sang 'Have a Cigar' live with PF), Roy Harper's limo drove off with his stage clothes still in it (he actually had a full concert set before PF went on, with his own band). He went into a rage when he heard this; I think he punched out a few windows in the Floyd's own tour van.

This inspired the secne during 'One of my Turns'.

Well there you are now, another nugget of infinite wisdom.

I always thougt Tom Petty was the fifth Beatle....

1. roger sang most of it from the live bootlegs i've heard with dave singing along at parts.

3. isn't that knebworth show the one when ricks keyboard went out of tune and then the song just fell apart midway through "shine on you crazy diamond"?

I saw the 'Animals-In the Flesh' tour (first concert I ever saw - the Miami show) & it was a good thing they got Roy to sing in the studio, cause' Rog & Dave struggled through it. To hear this lackluster performance, check out the 'Hurricane Floyd Hits Miami' bootleg.
