The Madcap Laughs

i just got the Madcap Laughs about a week ago, and I bought an imported version from HMV in Australia. It's got 6 bonus tracks on it, all of which are just different takes of the songs on the album. Is this common or have I stumbled upon some prized rarity?

Maybe, just maybe, these are the extra tracks featured on that MP3 that someone else was discussing on the 'Relics' thread.

hodjpokol if you want to get the rest of Syd's albums, try going through Rocking Horse, 101 Adelaide Street (http://www.rockinghorse.net/).

I'm pretty sure that you can get the "Crazy Diamond" box set through them (which AFAIK has everything he ever released except "Bob Dylan Blues").

yeah, i go there quite a bit. Is the crazy diamond box set upstairs or down?

There's a lot of really cool Floyd stuff there actually. Downstairs has all sorts of Japanese versions of the albums and upstairs there is a (presumably very rare) Floyd interview disc with a massive booklet attached. Also, there's a book about Syd upstairs which has been there a while without being sold. If they take the price down, i might buy it.

I wish I had bought the box set now that im reminded of it, but I don't think I would be economically justified in doing so now, seeming as I already own the Madcap Laughs.

btw, have you seen the Live at Pompeii video anywhere in Australia?

It's been well over 6 months since I was last there, but I think it was upstairs that I saw the box set (think it was around $55). I'm not sure if it'd still be there...perhaps try asking one of the staff if they still have it in stock. If you've already got Madcap...well (personally) I'd still buy it because you're getting Barret and Opel at a cheaper price. Then you could always sell you're copy of Madcap!

I've never seen "Live at Pompeii" for sale here! I've only ever seen a couple of the songs from the concert played on Rage. They're meant to be releasing it on DVD in the not too distant future, hopefully there will be a Region 4 release, so us Floyd starved Aussie's can enjoy it!

but does the box set have the bonus out-takes? and also, Madcap Laughs and Syd Barrett is such a specialised taste that i might have trouble selling it. But i'll keep the box set option in mind.

righteo then. I've already found two places, however, in brisbane where i can get the Barrett records individually, so i think i'll take that option. I might stop at 'Barrett' and not buy Opel anyhow. Do you think 'Opel' is worthwile?

Well it's not really a complete studio album - most of the tracks are the finished product. Not that it's bad or anything, it's just that the songs were basically what was usable after the failed effort to make a third solo album. The actual song "Opel" is one of Syd's best IMO.
