I'm not up to replacing my entire Cd collection just yet, or am I? I guess my recent misfortune has an upside.

Do you have to have a 5.1 to get any benefit at all or is it still better through ordinary stereo?

I doubt if you'd get any benefit in ordinary stereo, the whole point of dvd audio is to give you 5.1 surround sound. I think.

Exactly, you need a DTS decoder for that. Most low-end DVD players offer a model with the option of a DTS decoder built-in, which should save you some bucks instead of buying a receiver with a DTS decoder...

I think I would still buy it then cos i'm bound to buy the equipment somewhen down the line. That reminds me my student loan should be in soon

Yes although i'm currently working a 50-60 hour week at the moment and have access to a cash and carry hence student loan left over

Hypothetically you could put both super-high-sampling-rate Stereo AND full-5.1-surround on one disc, but that'd just be stupid. Get with the times, people. It's only four more speakers.

I learned this the hard way... if you play those DTS CDs without a DTS decoder you get a loud eardrum-damaging SCREEEEEEECH which blew my best headphones.
