Question What's everyone reading at the moment

Seppos are excused cause they can't read apparently

Which actually leads me onto a discovery about Ice Cream trucks in the US (l'll get bored with this subject eventually). Due to reading being a non-required subject in US schools (and yes l did have a link to support this but have lost it ... had something to do with the national anthem and how it got rewritten in Iowa or somewhere), a sad situation has developed in modern day US. Take any vehicle and play the stereo loud and in some suburbs of major cities in the US people will come rushing out to buy ice cream as you drive past. This has really upset latinos in Florida and other places.

There's some kind of message in Texans waiting on the sidewalk with their $2 to buy a flake 99 as a hearst drives past ....

Anyway back to what l'm reading James Herbert "Once", unfort should have a 15+ rating so certain people will not be able to read it.

Because l'm a good bloke, and to prevent whinging and bickering from our American friends have found the supporting article and posted it below..... you can thank me later....

Quote:

ELKHART, Ind. (AP) - A group of Indiana fifth-graders was baffled by the words to a song they sang every morning in class.

So they rewrote its lyrics to be more understandable to children.

The song just happened to be "The Star Spangled Banner."

"We changed the words so a younger child could understand," Adriana Burton, a Daly Elementary School teacher, told The Truth of Elkhart for a story Tuesday. "They were reading the lyrics and said, `Gosh, what does this mean?'"

"Rampart" and "parapet" were simplified to "walls." Stripes went from "broad" to "wide." "Perilous" became "dangerous" and "gallantly" became "bravely."

The 25 students in Burton's class used dictionaries and a thesaurus to update the lyrics to the 188-year-old national anthem.

The children presented the new version — all four verses — at a student assembly Monday afternoon.

Burton said she knew the assignment had been successful when one of her students spotted a child on the playground wall and said, "Hey, Mrs. Burton, he's on the rampart!"

Burton said the students intend to update the words to the Gettysburg Address and the Declaration of Independence later this year.

Jethro (you know we'll never get around to what we are reading), sadly even worse has happened. In Washington, DC, a black city councilman used the word niggardly, and the town broke out in protest. Eventually he was forced to step-down. This happened about 3 years ago. Earlier this year, a North Carolina school teacher used this case as an example to her students of why being literate is necassary. She was suspended because niggardly sounds offensive.

I could go on...

In my opinion (and I realise this may sound racist although it is not meant to be) PC has gone way over the top and is coming down the otherside. An example is that you'll find most companies will employ a token person of a race, colour, creed regardless of whether they are the best qualified just to appear PC. I don't have the facts to back this up I admit, but I am sure the majority of you will see where I am coming from. I mean I don't agree with racism, everyone is equal but at the end of the day who gives a toss what race someone is and it shouldn't influence life in general. If everybody was just a bit more tolerant there wouldn't be a problem. Anyways thats my mini rant for the day, back to PF
