Why am I obsessed?

Hello to you people on this forum.

My sort of first post.

Heres my story so far.

I'm 18 years old from Melbourne, Australia. Before early this year I had no idea who Pink Floyd were. Well ya know what I mean. Except for "Another Brick in the Wall".

It all started with watching "The Wall" on DVD. I saw it a few times and I really enjoyed it. So I start listening to The Wall a bit, then Wish You Were Here a lot and a little bit of DSOM.

On April the 7th, I saw an advert on tv late at night about a concert with Roger Waters. It took a few moments to click who Roger Waters was. I thought, that I have to see this concert, would be a once in a lifetime oppertunity to see this. Well the concert was the next day, rang up, got some tickets for me and my Mum, as she sort of grew up listening to this music.

Went to the concert, couldn't beleive how good the seats were for the cheap ones. Was right on the side but only about 10 metres away. Never had been to a concert prior to this, so it was all very exciting.

Well, this was the best thing I've ever seen in my life, I didn't know half the songs that were played, but it didn't matter.

I didn't sleep after the concert for 2 days, I just couldn't get over how good it was.

Now 6 months on, I can honestly say I'm obsessed. Listening to the ITF DVD every day, Animals would have to be my favourite album, Dogs from ITF has got me hooked , got pretty much every album of Pink Floyd's and Roger's solo career stuff. I really like Amused to Death.

I still though, can't get over how good this whole Pink Floyd thing is. It's like it's more than music, because I've never listened to so much music of the same group for so long. I guess though I've never really liked your typical 90's pop sort of music. I definently think there music appeals to all generations.

Now it's lead me here. Very interesting reading through all the forums here. Great source of news.

Anyway, my question. Is it like this for other people? were you like this? Just listening to Pink Floyd music everyday, getting as much of it you can. Ahh who knows, maybe it's just something I need to keep me going through my boring life Hope not.

Sorry for the rant. "Are there any paranoids in the audience tonight"? Yes I'd say so.

G'day fellow Australian! I've been hooked on Pink Floyd for about 2 and half years. I'm constantly listening to their albums, as well as the solo works of Roger and David (and Syd!). Of course, I do listen to other music, but Pink Floyd are my favourite band of all time. I would have gone to see Roger when he was here, but he didn't come to Brisbane and I didn't have enough money/time to get down to Sydney (or Melbourne)! Oh well....

Shine on!

Your obssetion is perfectly normal--How CAN'T you be obssesed with PF would be a better question (or atleast I hope so :o)

...But you should check out other bands too. Start buying some music from YES! ...then from there go on to Jethro Tull--Or RUSH--or LED ZEPPELIN...but start with YES!
If you listen to PINK FLOYD more for their excellent music, and not for their complex lyrics..then I think you'll find YES to be outstanding....their lyrics are great, but not quite as good as the Floyds but their music (IMO) is unbeatable!......Buy CLOSE TO THE EDGE a.s.a.p.

By the way, how old are you? Do we have another young person on the forum ?

Welcome Pritch. I think your obsession is pretty normal, considering that you are in the process of discovering the vast and fascinating universe of Floyd music. I think it was the same for me many years ago... a sort of revelation. Obviously these days I also listen to other music, because I like a lot of different things (like the guy on my current avatar) but PF is always - and always will be - my number one.

Welcome Pritch.
I think this obsession seems perfectly normal. Sounds to me like you're on a high. I agree absolutely with Dogs. It wasn't till after I started watching my ITF DVD repeatedly that I also became obsessed with the song. You'll find a few others around here who also feel Dogs was the best performance on the DVD. So...welcome, welcome, and enjoy.

What he said, you're obviously seriously disturbed and I recommend you see a doctor immediately - my rates are very resonable.

Yep, Pritch... Thorin13 said it all, if you don't seek for help you'll soon start frequenting this board more and more, you could eventually reach the 3000 posts level, that's kinda point of no return... nah, avoid it, you're still too young

The fact that he's here at all probably means it's too late, and one so young too.

You young-uns got a long way to go...

I can honestly say that I have listened to Pink Floyd at least three times a week for 29 years. Since I've been driving, it's been quite a bit higher frequency. I enjoy quite alot of other music (see my list of attended concerts somewhere else on this crazy forum), but I always come back to the Floyd. To this day, David's guitar work on SOYCD and Echoes puts a lump in my throat.

So Pritch - you're not too obsessed. When you start wandering through the Greek Isles looking for Rick - that's obsessed. When you name your first kid Syd - that's obsessed. But as long as you just listen to as much Pink Floyd (along with their associated solo stuff) as possible and truly appreciate the genius of the music and lyrics - I'd say you're quite sane.
