Similarities

Has anyone else noticed this. In "Lost for Words", the tempo change, chord progresion and bass line beginning at about 2:36, are very reminiscent of "Love on the Air". To my ears anyway.

I know there are other Gilmour "precursor works" out thre (Raise My Rent / What do you want from Me) , but I was just wondering if anyone else noticed this one.

Re: Similarities

I didn't notice that one. Unless you meant that one part of LOTA from 1:24 to 1:38. That seems similar to me.

BTW. Did you notice how much the outro solo of Murder (starting at about 3:30) is reminiscent of Sheep?

Re: Similarities

Hmm...Raise My Rent always reminded me most of What Do You Want From Me rather than Marooned...

I agree.

yeah there are a shitload of Gilmour riffs that could be nearly mirrored to Pink Floyd songs. but Roger is very guilty as well. quite noticed on his "Pros and Cons...." solo effort. its alot like The Wall (though it was said later to actually be songs left off of The Wall and revamped for his solo release)

Re: Similarities

the funky bit in G minor (Funky Dung maybe??) in 'Atom Heart Mother Suite' is very similar to 'Any Colour You Like' off DSOTM

same chords & key I think...

While the Raise My Rent/WDYWFM connection is quite evident it escapes to me the Lost For Words thing. I'll give a listen but all I can say now is that I hate Love On The Air while I really like LFW.

Re: Similarities

This will probably sound like a horrid exaggeration, but LFW is on my Top 10 Floyd Songs. Ever. Just glad to see someone else enjoyed it. I hadn't heard much good about it from anyone until you praised it, yannis. For personal reasons, I have an attachment to it, even to the lyrics, although they're by no means poetic beauty.

Anyway, on topic...

I don't see anything wrong with reusing a riff here or there. I believe it was Sydney who made a nice observation that it's like the repeating of dance steps.

The hardest thing in music is to not subconciously recreate a rhythm reminiscent of another. It's so hard to find doors that are unopened in music, because so many people have made contributions to the never-ending art.

God only knows how many times I've had to trash a creation because I accidently recreated ABITW Pt. 2.

Re: Similarities

I love Lost For Words because it recreates the simple sound of certain songs of the early Floyd, guitar and piano and a nice melody, something missed since 1972 I'd say.
