Bob Dylan Blues

Two of my favorite musicmaking ico- oh hell, my two favorite individual musicmakers are Syd Barrett and Bob Dylan.

When Syd's Greatest Hits album was released, I didn't buy it. Why? I have the box set, no need. And I downloaded the new song off Kazaa and could live w/o it. I had gotten some short, stupid instrumental thing. It was the first time I had gotten a misnomer file off there (but it wouldn't be the last). I didn't give any of it a second thought until tonight when I went and downloaded another song titled "Bob Dylan Blues" (not to be confused with Bob Dylan's Blues, for the Dylan fans, heh). This one was the right one, and I am BLOWN AWAY. The reason for this post is:

What do you Syd fans make of this song?

I don't have an answer for myself yet. Just first impressions/thoughts. I am stunned at how structured the song is, both musically and lyrically. For Syd, it is simply astonishing how solid this song is. When was this "outtake" recorded? Oh hell, it doesn't matter, I'm amazed at this song. I'm not even sure what kind of "position" Syd was taking on Bob, or even if you can say he had an opinion of him, regardless of what the song "seems" to you. You know, with Syd being Syd. Opinions?
Like I've said, I'm blown away. I wish I had a musical education and more eloquence in general, so I could use words to accurately describe what I'm thinking instead of sounding like a schmuck. This song is special to me. I am downright aching for more. Of course, there won't be more (well, we know there's more, I mean more for the public to hear). That frickin sucks.

Shine on You Crazy Diamond.

Re: Bob Dylan Blues

it is a good song. As far as I understand, Syd wrote the song before he had a contract to do so. Also, I believe Syd was in fact a fan of Dylan (eventually adopting his curly-mop hairstyle) and was just lampooning his musical and lyric style.

Thumbs up Re: Bob Dylan Blues

i love this song, too. for me it represents escaping from this world into some another world. the song's fresh and easy to understand and that's why it's so special.
syd sang it out perfectly.

and yes, syd was a fan of dylan. and yes, he did imitate his hairdo. which was really nice btw. ( )

Re: Bob Dylan Blues

Ya it's definitly a good song.......doesn't sound like he's taking a negative or positive approach to Dylan....like with, "Make a whole lotta doe, but I deserve it though, I got soul and a good heart of gold." He's just making a fair judgement of Dylan, he's rich but he earned everything he gets

No. Actually it wasn't exactly Dylan's hairdo. It was the "obligatory Hendrix perm".

I don't imagine it was anything other than genetics that defined Jimi's tonsorial stylings, Kaya.

Cheers,

I THINK so, and of course his (arguably) greatest song he lifted from Dylan.

I may be a bit confused about when Syd got the Hendrix perm. Was this the bad perm that he got while in the US? I've read that he got a bad perm, hated it, and dumped a bunch of Brylcream on his head as well as mashed up Mandrax. The one and same perm or not???

Re: Bob Dylan Blues

I LOVE the song! Why wasn't it released initially? Anyway, maybe he's making parrallels to himself and Dylan. He probably identified with him in some way. Both poets and all. Plus Dylan's attitude towards the business and his political convictions probably struck a cord with Syd. Of course this is pure conjecture cuz I really have NO idea!!
