Re: The Wall movie: love or hate

without a tad of self-indulgence we wud never have had such albums as The Wall. The Floyd have always been a bit pretentious and self-indulgent, especially roger.

Re: The Wall movie: love or hate

Self-indulgence doesn't equate to good listening and The Wall would have been much better with a little quality control being enforced.

Re: The Wall movie: love or hate

Too much self-indulgence has of course a negative effect but my point is rather that floyd do have this 'edge' of self-indulgence, and i for one believe that is a major factor in The Wall - without it the wall just wudn't be the wall. secondly, i think rogers self-indulgence was balanced out by Gilmour's rationality if u like, on many of the floyds albums and this balance rly gave something to the music.

Re: The Wall movie: love or hate

The first time I saw The Wall, i was fairly new to Pink Floyd, and thought Pink Floyd was actually a "person" rather than a band, as portrayed in the movie... (this was in my early days of becoming a Floyd fan). I remember loving the music in the movie, but I also remember the movie kinda scaring me in some ways.

I think if you dont know about Floyd at all, and watch the movie, i think it can be kinda scary, lol.

Re: The Wall movie: love or hate

Though not nearly as shameful a PF newbie as PFOnline, I too was very early in my PF fanaticism when The Wall album, then the movie appeared. I've said here too many times how much I love the music (Live Show syndrome, perhaps?), so enthusiastically I anticipated the film's release.

I have to say, though, it's a bit "shaky hand, shaky hand" or Choice C, since I enjoyed parts of the film - the animated sequences mainly - was bored by most of it, but the soundtrack?
Duffman says, "OH YEAH!"

Re: The Wall movie: love or hate

The only reason I don't like the film is because they had to butcher Waiting for the Worms. It's a nice song... but it goes to show that PF and a cohesive storyline don't quite fit.

Re: The Wall movie: love or hate

Sorry, what? How does the (brief and very excusable) editing of WFtW disrupt the storyline in any way? I thought the WFtW sequence was fantastic...

I love the film. It's one of my favourites. It's Roger's swan song. "Self-indulgent" means nothing to me. The only thing that's important is whether it moves you or not.

You're right. And in fact The Wall movie does nothing for me, apart from a few good scenes. Plus, two high points of the album (in terms of music) are ruined (Mother) or deleted (Hey You).
