So, either the "rather dull child" is attempting to draw a kind of smile that resembles a graveyard at moonlight, or the Fassbinder face in question has a smile resembling a moonlit graveyard drawn by a rather dull child. Confused? You will be.

By "attempting a graveyard" I am getting slightly confused too, I believe it either means a small child attempting to draw a graveyard at moonlight (graveyard at moonlight being the subject matter) or a child attempting to walk through or sit through a graveyard at moonlight while drawing a smile. After thinking about it a while, I don't really know what it means, either way, it probably means the girl was not very attractive, yet he found her fine because she liked him a lot.

It means her teeth were crooked, like crooked tombstones in a moonlit graveyard, as drawn by a dull (bored) child. All clear now?
