Was Meddle ahead of it's time?

This isn't so much a call for a debate, but rather a question to you serious fans of the early 70s late 60s.

I'm not sure, but I think Meddle was released in 1970...around there anyway.

Listening to Echoes and One of these Days from the greatest hits album has sorta clued me into something.

Is it just me or do these songs sound like they're really from the 80s?

I dunno, the recording quality I suppose was upgraded, but I'm talking more about instrumentation and the certain minor chords ( I don't think minor keys were popular back then ).

Granted Echoes doesn't sound like it's ahead of it's time, but I'm speaking specifically about the guitar solo in the last...7 minutes or so of the song.

*shrugs* I dunno, I haven't heard much old music outside of Pink Floyd, but it certainly sounds at least a decade ahead of it's time.

Pink Floyd as a band was always ahead of their time.

Meddle is just one of the many examples.

It's release was in 1971. And I think it had something to do with their equipment, which was expansive and, at times, rather unusual.

It may just be you. It sounds to me from the time it was created.

Yes, but progressive rock is also extremely well known for taking motifs and imagery from the past.

Today's electronica is probably the nearest thing that exists to 'prog'.

yeah, i think the music i dig most is stuff that's released long ago but still sounds mind-blowing in present day. Pink Floyd does that quite nicely.

That's part of why I like Meddle--it never sounds "dated".

Hmmm... the music itself is obviously a product of the '70's. You cannot escape that fact. It's more the brilliance of the piece that gives it it's longevity.
