Re: Gilmour the Floyd Bassist???

"I was never a bass player. I've never played anything. I play guitar
a bit on the records and would play bass, because I sometimes want to hear the
*sound* I make when I hit a string on a bass with a pick or my finger; it
makes a different sound than anybody else makes, to me. But I've never been
interested in playing the bass. I'm not interested in playing instruments and
I never have been."

Roger Waters, 1992

Re: Gilmour the Floyd Bassist???

He was talking about Amused To Death.

Give me Roger on bass and Nick on drums, and I'll listen to whatever they play for hours on end.

Re: Gilmour the Floyd Bassist???

The thing is, let's say you're a great songwriter but can only strum a little bit on acoustic guitar or something then let's say you're a brilliant guitarist but you can barely write two words that rhyme. The first case you could be Bob Dylan (and maybe he was a better player than I described but he certainly didn't flex any that muscle on most of his songs) and in the second case you're some unknown session musician. Ultimately Roger can survive on his own much better than David can. Roger can write songs, maybe play some of them, maybe hire some people who can play better than he to help him out. Dave on the other hand has been milking the same fucking catalog of Roger's songs for the last 20 years. I don't know about his new album but I'd say there are maybe 2.5 good songs (LTF only counts has half a song) between Dave's last two PF albums.

Ultimately David is one of the greatest guitarist ever to stand on this planet, and therefore he will always be accepted into jams, and therefore survive as much as this Roger Waters, who ever he is.

Re: Gilmour the Floyd Bassist???

But then how come everyone I know;thinks of Pink Floyd whenever they see a Roger Waters solo album but go "Whats His Name" when showed Dave's solo efforts?Except for say On An Island,Dave's solo efforts dont have the repeat value.

It all depends on personal tastes in the end.

Re: Gilmour the Floyd Bassist???

Yes,its a futile debate;i think it was best when they all tried as a band and hence each member holds his/her unique job ecept for say "Yoko Ono's plastic Band.

In the second case you could be Jeff Beck.

Hardly an 'unknown session musician' now is he!
