Re: greatest drummers

Bill Bruford uses some of the best drumming techniques I've heard. Check out Larks Tongues in Aspic part 2 by King Crimson, around 4:58 he drums in 2/4 over the band's 10/8 for about 10 seconds before returning to that timing. There's also some really good percussion work on the album Red and some excellent electronic drums on Discipline. Must-have albums for any progressive rock fan anyway!

Re: greatest drummers

Bill Bruford. Not that I think that he is "better" than the others, it's just a question of styles and I particularly like his. Two of my favourite drumming moments are the beginning of "Heart of the Sunrise" and the beginning of "Indiscipline" (above all the live versions). He shows you how many different timings you can play with even if the band is just playing in 4/4. Amazing!

Re: greatest drummers

Been thinking about this one lately. My top 4 for modern drummers would be:
-Gene Holgan (Strapping Young Lad)
-Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree)
-Mike Portony (Dream Theater)
-Dino Campanella (dredg)
...in no defined order, though Holgan is probably #1.

I've also had the good fortune to see all of them, except Portnoy, over the summer.

Yo -what the Cat said - cool. Also all other Bruford observations. Like to add Billy Cobham. "Spectrum" burned back to back with "Feels Good to Me" makes a good couple hours of driving tunes.
