I think it is Meddle that's the first great Floyd album.

Overall, Atom Heart Mother would be the best in the list.

Followed by Piper.

Albums with PARTS that outshine the above two, however, would be UmmaGumma (Narrow Way is, arguably, better than some AHM material), and some songs on Saucer surpass most tracks on Piper, but "Saucer" itself, is atrocious to my ears.

Atom Heart Mother, from that list. With Saucerful close second.

Ummagumma was a horrible record. The Live record is good but the studio is just awkward and not very satisfying to listen to because it is quite boring and does not have many catchy tunes. Though Atom Heart Mother was quite good compared to ummagumma it was not produced well and as seen in the earlier BBC biography(early 90s. not Omnibus)they say that they had to slow down parts of the tape etc. and they went through hell producing it.

Inaccurate.

PATGOD: UK #6
ASOS: UK #9
Ummagumma: UK #5 (doing better on the chart than PATGOD)
AHM: UK# 1 (The band's first #1 album)

Comparison to USA charts:

PATGOD #131
ASOS: No chart
Ummagumma: #74
AHM: #55

As far as where the line is drawn between the Early Floyd versus regular floyd, I believe the division is properly made at Meddle.

Meddle introduced the "new" sound of Pink Floyd...on One of these Days and Echoes. And even the soft middle was more reminiscent of Dark Side than anything that came before Meddle.

Before Meddle, we hear a few select tracks, bits and pieces, that contain the future Floyd sound. I think the first such example, though, is on the Narrow Way on UmmaGumma...which continues on AHM. but nothing really CHANGES Floyd like Meddle does.

as far as I know, the band agrees. They consider "Meddle" the first true Floyd album. Everything from Meddle on, therefore, is not in the category of "early floyd".
