yeah, i was being pissy (for lack of better word) at the time of the said comment. it really has no relevance now.

Well, folks, here's how it happened for me...

I wish I could say that I dazzled him with some brilliant wit, or made some sort of impression, but alas, it was not to be...

Here's what happened when I (ever so briefly) met David:

January 18th, 2002, outside the Royal Festival Hall, London

I joined Phil ... and overheard one of David's people just inside the door saying that David would be coming in soon. My heart started pounding in anticipation...

So, I began preparing myself. He won't be as wonderful as I expect, I told myself...It's okay to be a little bit let down, it's only natural to build someone up, after all. Even after seeing him onstage, I'm aware that there are many levels of "hero-worship" and that I'm as guilty as the next person of putting him on a pedestal. So, hey, it's okay to be a little disappointed, in the end. I braced myself, and his car came around the corner, pulling into the lot behind the hall...

Oh, shit...

From where I stood, directly in front of the car, I could see him sitting there, regarding the crowd that was gathering between him and the door. I know he doesn't like being rushed, so I just held back, amazed at how calm I felt. When he glanced out the front window, though, my heart sped up again.

He's absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!!! I couldn't believe it. There was no letdown here, at least, not for me.

Anyway, he got out of the car and the group surged forward, just as I'd hoped they wouldn't. There was no way for me to get closer, and I didn't want to get lost in the throng anyway... I hear Phil saying "... move over by the door", so I do, figuring he's got waaaay more experience at this than I do, so he must know what he's talking about.

One of David's assistants smiled at me, nodding, and I felt like I was doing the right thing, until I heard a voice saying "Sorry, No More."

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! That's just not fair!

Phil comes out of the crowd, looks at me and says "Did you get anything signed?" and I shake my head. There's a look of determination on Phil's face, now, and David is coming our way, still surrounded by people, and he's turning them down.

All of a sudden, Phil steps back to David, puts his arm around David's shoulder and says "Come on, David, you've got to sign for her...she's come all the way from America"...

AND HE LEADS HIM RIGHT TO ME!!!!!

David just looks up for a second, says "Oh, all right," (but in a very nice way) and smiles at me when I offer him my notebook and a pen.

Some RUDE twerp thrusts his own paper in over mine and David signs it, giving him an irritated look. Phil brings us together, now. I'm right next to him, in fact, I even manage to brush up against him (in his leather jacket...oh dear gawdddddd...) and inhale his cologne (kind of spicy and woodsy, a subtle musky scent) and David smiles at me and I smile back, saying "thank you so very much," after he signs the notebook. I wanted desperately to give him a hug or a peck on the cheek, or just to talk to him and tell him how much I love and appreciate his work. I want to let him know that my "Thank you" isn't just for signing a piece of paper, it's for everything he's contributed through his music, for all the inspiration he's given to me and to others through his work.

A quick little nod (that's like a benediction for me, if I may be sacrilegious for just a moment), and he walked away, into the Hall. I waited until he was out of sight before I went over to Phil, who was talking to Simon again, and gave him a big, big, BIG HUG.

And that's the story...

Rather anti-climactic, I know, but reality often is. Any wonder I'm not a big fan of Reality?
