i heard the question on a podcast and thought it strange that it took over 100 years for a U.S. President to leave the country while in office...

you would have thought one of them would have wondered into The Land of Botley...

Not to burden the discussion with seriousness (oh, my, no), but most national leaders did not travel much prior to the 20th century. This was mainly due to the time it took, but also because of the lack of rapid communications.

Not to mention the possibility of being deposed while on tour, in the case of those more highly-strung countries.
