Record covers and artwork in general

I really didn't know where to post this but I thought that the "Visual Arts Forum" was a good one (I think I could have also posted this in the "General Music Babbling Forum").

Pink Floyd are not only outstandig by their sound but also by their visual aspect. Their concerts are ("were" I sould have said...) a magnificent visual experience. And as a band who worried about every little detail the record covers are also wonderful and inmediately recognizable thanks to Storm Thorgerson's talent.

I thought that we could have a thread to discuss the work of all those visual artists who are related in one way or another with rock music, post covers or artwork that we find really interesting (even if the music in those records is not so interesting) or post pictures, photographs... by those artists even if they are not record covers.

Obviously, I think that Storm Thorgerson is a genius. My favourite Pink Floyd cover is "Animals". It transmits you the mood of the record even before you listen to it. The thing I like about Thorgerson's artwork is that it is based around ideas and concepts and most of his photos surpise you or make you think, like the one I've attached.

Another record cover that I really like is Elton John's "Blue Moves". It's a painting by Patrick Procktor and most of his work has got some kind of relaxing melancholic effect (above all his landscape paintings).

I haven't seen another thread discussing record covers artwork but if there is one I'm sorry for making a DDT!

I love Stanley Donwood's work. He's the guy that has done the artwork for many of Radiohead's albums (look at the Kid A and Amnesiac booklets..beautiful).

Re: Record covers and artwork in general

There`s something wrong with that cover, it looks cut in two pieces and then put together again but with something lost...
And I like Dean`s art too, my favourite is Close To The Edge cover for Yes.

I like Roger Dean's artwork too (my favourite one is "Relayer") but he tends to repeat himself a bit.

Storm Thogerson is a genius and yes I absolutely love that cover too. But (and I'm sorry to get technical) wasn't the Animals cover Roger's idea? Storm's original idea for Animals was the kid seeing his parents having sex, which..... i dunno didn't quite have the same effect as Battersea Power Station

I suppose it was still Storm who took the photos and got it to look the way it did so kudos to him for that, but it wasn't all him on that one.

Re: Record covers and artwork in general

Storm Thorgeson hasn't always been such a genius...

"...But it is no worse than my first meeting with an artist from Hipgnosis, who were the people that designed Pink Floyd's covers. We had commissioned them to design Houses of the Holy, and this guy Storm Thorgerson came in carrying this picture of an electric green tennis court with a tennis racquet on it. I said, "what the hell does that have to do with anything?" and he said, "Racket..don't you get it?" I said, "Are you trying to imply thata our music is a 'racket'? Get out!" We never saw him again."
