Looking for new music

I'm trying to find new types of music to enjoy. I'm thinking of something along the lines of progressive rock, maybe something jazz influenced. The only problem is, I don't know where to start. Could anyone direct me to some sources or provide their personal preferences? Thanks!

Yeah, they're alright, but i'm not entirely impressed with them. I'm looking for more obscure music, the stuff that you'd never hear on the radio for reasons of song length and style.

Have you heard of or tried Sigur Ros? Pretty sure you wouldn't hear them on the radio. They've been discussed quite a bit both in the "music related babbling", and "Just babbling" section of this site.

There's also a Pianist called Kieko Matsui who is plays a kinda jazz/classical fusion, if keyboard music is your bag.

Not exactly sure what you're after, but give a listen to Air, Godspeed You Black Emperor!, the Greyboy Allstars, the Kronos Quartet, Mogwai, Philip Glass, Sigur Rós, and Tortoise. There's a wide variety in that selection and hopefully you'll find something you like.

If you're thinking along the lines of prog, then I'd recommend Kula Shaker. Its not jazzy, more Hindu in origin but its rarely played on radio and well worth a listen.

Jazzy? I hope you like some of the old stuff : Bread, Crosby Stills and Nash, Blood Sweat and Tears yeah, these guys are obscure all right!! Try some Gary Moore while you're at it... might also want to go along with some Sigur Ros, Pentangle, Quartango... John McLaughlin, Pat Metheny and ofcourse Jaco Pastouris...

Hope that helps...

IF you haven't heard YES yet...
DO IT!
Long songs...rarely play them on the radio, I don't see why that would be a reason for attraction though

Ah yes, and if you want to hear Jazz infected rock, two words, Steely Dan, they are excellent, it doesn't get more classic then them, an extreamly jazzy rock band, if you don't know them, I'm sure you would like them. The albums you should buy are Aja, Pretzal Logic and Katy Lied, these three are the best IMO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep, i've never seen them, but I heard they STINK in concert:o
Have you been to the website Simon, supposedly they had a list of names before Steely Dan, and they are there on the website, some of them quite intresting.
I also like thier newest album Two Against Nature, it isn't half bad, they are coming out with a new one though!
Perhaps a new tour, and I will HOW MUCH they stink in concert, OR I will be pleasently surprised...
...hoping for this second one
