Censorship?

What do you guys think of censorship in things like music and books?
Do you think we should censor lterature and music when we don't censor art? I mean there's David standing several feet tall in all his glory yet people cringe at the word shit in a song. I can understand the need for watching waht we say in public palces like this in case peopel got offended but can't we just put warnings on books instead of the publishing company making a writer edit their work. I understand the need for censoprship but sometimes i think it's too strong and if peopel don't wanna hear it or read it they don't have to, but why should the rest of us suffer the true essence of a character in a book because the writer has had to edit out the swearing.
Tell me what you think

cheers

Since when do we censor books?
And I certainly agree Sydney, unless it's mindless rambling, music should not be censored.

Well thats terrible, I say there should be a law against, I say!
Just think of what would have happened if they censored The Catcher In The Rye, it would have been a whole differant book!

Catcher in the Rye, as well as some other classics often make "Banned" lists each year. Schools, libraries, etc, often do censor books. Earlier this year my own area made international headlines when the fire company refused to direct traffic (as is their duty during public events) for a library-benefit triathalon because the library continued to allow children to check out Harry Potter books. And we all know that Harry Potter makes kids worship the devil.

I don't like songs with obscene or violent lyrics being played on public radio, but I'm against censoring recordings themselves.
A warning label is sufficient.

I think it's wrong to censor books. Attempts to censor classic works like Twain's "Huckleberry Finn" and the aforementioned "Catcher In The Rye" & "Harry Potter" are idiotic.

'Catcher In the Rye' especially. The reason the word f u c k (gasp!) is in the book is so that Holden can talk about how stupid it is that people write it on the walls at an elementary school-- not really obscene material, if you ask me.

And the reason Huck Finn has the word Negro in it is because thats what they were called at the time (plus its a bit on the anti-racist side there).
