I wouldn't call Kurt a genius, but he did have a distinctive voice, quirky lyrics and a lot of charisma. The fact that he killed himself forever places him on a podium, whether or not he deserves it.
If he were still with us, he'd likely be just another forgotten rock star, creatively tapped out.

Or maybe not.
