Potentially Pretentious Poetry

I was inspired by Simon to send these out to the world at large, from my collection, "Potentially Pretentious Poetry", which I used to read from at "Potentially Pretentious Poetry" night with my dear friend, Steve...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fairy tales and the damage they did
Twisted my brain since I was a kid
I'm still waiting for that handsome Prince
On his gleaming white steed to save me.
I railed against Snow White's subservience
Seven tiny husbands who made one huge mess
All the same I find myself sharing her song
"Someday My Prince Will Come".
I want to stand up on my own two feet
And hold up my head as I walk down the street
But all the while I don't want to be alone
And I know there's no shame in it anyway.
Here I am, frozen in slumber
My mind slowing down, and I grow ever dumber
Unable to speak out loud for my mind
Scares me with the thoughts I think.
How do I manage to break free of this curse
And prove to the world what value I'm worth?
How do I shake off this creeping doubt
And prove all of this to me?

Re: Potentially Pretentious Poetry

"The Whole Truth"
I'm so sorry you
Misunderstood,
If I could take back the moment
I would,
But give me the chance
And I'd say it again
I know
Though perhaps in a different way.
What would it take
To show
That my dramatic statements conveyed
The truth
In a less subtle fashion
Than I would have liked?
Upon reflection, I suppose
I would not
Want to change what I said
Or have it forgotten;
Let it stand as a tribute
To our inability
To withstand
Our own honesty.

"The Embrace"
I opened my eyes and saw the night
Glittering with a thousand stars.
I smiled and opened my arms
And Night opened hers, too.
She smiled and then opened her eyes,
And the moon waxed full
Spilling brilliance out over me
As I danced alone closing my eyes
Closing my arms about his memory,
And shed a tear
Glittering with a thousand stars.

Re: Potentially Pretentious Poetry

I cannot bear this indecision
Its power over me is growing too strong
The longer it lasts the deeper its roots sink
Into the soil of my spirit and my soul.
I cannot keep trying to wait it out –
I should close my eyes and leap into it blind
How long can I be expected to intuit blind
Without knowing what the decision will be?
I'm not so strong as all of this
My will to hold on is fading
Stretching to break with the horizon
And always just out of reach.
