Gimmie Shelter Rocumentary IMO it was the end of the 60's peace and love movement. If the Angles didn't park the freakin' bikes near the front of the stage like idiots then I think the concert would have been more peaceful. So who's fault was it - the crowd, the Hells Angels or the Stones for having the Angels work the stage? Or should they not have lead off with Sympathy for the Devil.

As Keith prophesied when he saw a fence torn down by fans: "The first act of violence". Altamont (supposed to be "Woodstock West") was definately the end of the "Peace & Love" hippy era. I think hiring the Hells Angels to "police" the concert was idiotic, and because of their presence (along with alcohol & drugs), violence was guarenteed, regardless of where they parked their bikes. I would say there is enough blame to go around. Because it was a free concert, using the Angels for security looked like a good way to keep the costs down. Just goes to show no good intention will go unpunished. I don't think "Sympathy For The Devil" was their leadoff song, but it undoubtedly fueled the aura of evil & violence, and was being performed when Meredith Hunter was stabbed to death. BTW, I love the "Gimme Shelter" Rockumentary.

1. They were actually playing 'Under My Thumb' when Meredith Hunter was stabbed. 2. The man who hired the Angels to provide security at Altamont was also the man who introduced Pink Floyd to Ron Geesin. Shane's Two Fun Facts of the Day

You could be right. I've never seen the film myself, but I remember The Rolling Stone Encylcopedia of Rock 'n' Roll saying that a lot of people thought that 'Sympathy for the Devil' drove the Angels into a frenzy, but that they were actually playing 'Under My Thumb' at the time.

The shooting did happen during UMT. There were several fights that day, the first one happened while the Jefferson Airplane were performing and the guitar player got jacked in the face trying to break it up. Then the Angels went to wacking with led weighted pool sticks.

I'm not sure if what i saw was this show but I did see one on altamont and I thought those people were insane to put on a concert that large and not have planned it better. The angel security was a very bad move also. What a mess!!

Was Meredith shot or stabbed? Or stabbed with a gun? Or what? Last edited by GeraldTheMouse; 12-31-2002 at 02:17 AM.

He was stabbed by the Angels, apparently because (1) he was black and (2) his girlfriend was very pretty and very white.
