| Re: meaning of this line? Desperation cos time passes and we get older, quiet cos it is normal and we can do nothing to avoid it, hangin on cos there's not much more to do.

Please excuse my incredulity, Blaster, is it?, but I find it difficult to believe you do not understand that single line when you obviously understand the concept of "inner sancta" and "excelsior". Does the quote, "don't piss on my head and tell me it's raining" ring any bells? Anyway, welcome and please, before you start any more new threads, please browse the entire discussion board to see if your subject of interest hasn't already been covered. This aids in reducing the nuisance of duplicate threads and makes life less confusing for others. Thank you, Byron

| Re: meaning of this line? i appreciate your welcome, as well as your very impressive decoding of my fantastically cryptic name. i also appreciate your concern for what i understand. Byron, eh? I'm not one for pissing on human heads, but i did once happily masturbate to thoughts of men named after defunct literary figures. Last edited by 8l4573R : 12-30-2002 at 06:01 PM. |

| Re: meaning of this line? Um...okay, whatever floats yer boat, mate. But Byron is dead, not defunct. His poetry lives yet.

| welllllll in my opinion, or actually my best guess is: "hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way" means that in a moment of desperation, an Englishman doenst let down his hopes, but rather holds on and hopes for the best. pretty much "the English never give up, even in dying moments".........or SOMETHING.... man i really dont know, but i think im close...

| Re: meaning of this line? Yeah, I always thought that line had bad connotations. Not that I have anything against the British, but Roger, I guess, is kind of an insider, being a Brit, commenting on his own culture -- and in his trademark pessimism. I also thought it might have been a take on something Thoreau once wrote, "All men lead lives of quiet desperation." Or something along those lines. Blah, `Icarus` |
