| Kinda silly to compare the two really - I mean, we're talking the 'broad brush stroke' versus the visual translation of a book, err, big on minutiae. I'm not quite sure why George Lucus seems to believe that anyone really gives a monkeys about a story (ie: the current prequels) which practically everyone in the civilised world already knows, in great detail, the ending to (ie: Episodes IV, V & VI). That said, it was amazing to see the 'original' Star Wars trilogy unfold during that period at the end of the 70s and into the 1980s. LOTR is a completely different animal - the whole sheebang shot back-to-back over a couple of years supported by more CG than NASA. Actually, I saw the 'Two Towers' this afternoon ... extraordinary film, and, on balance, far more rivetting than SWs Episodes I & II. Question: Is, as posted earlier, Christopher Lee in both SW & LOTR ? Or are we actually talking about Christopher Lee in LOTR and Peter Cushing (Lee's fellow Hammer House of Horror colleague) in SW (Episode IV) ? May the force etc, etc ... |

| I've been collared many a time by SW-philes over the years, so I do have some idea about people's feeling for 'the story' and for the most part, I take your point, but sorry, three prequels ? The whole idea just doesn't do it for me (and, judging by some critical reaction I've heard and read, a number of others too). Do I give a rats about 'Young Indiana Jones' ? What lead Ellen Ripley towards a career in space mining/transportation ? James Bond - The Teen Years ? I don't really care - I'm drawn to what's happening next. If all a story can do is point me to a place that I've already been to, all of the preamble in the world will not save it. Before SW became an intrenched global merchandising and print-publishable entity, it was only really a story about a boy finding out about who he was (by way of an amazing intergalactic adventure). What's followed now is just froth and bubble - which leads me to the end of Episode III - Skywalker Sr turns to the 'dark side', Palpatine becomes an even bigger prick and Obi Wan discovers a love for dune-buggying. I know I'm being glib, but we do know where this is going; just not 'how' exactly. And the 'how' just ain't that important to me. |

I suppose you are not going to read The Hobbit after The Lord Of The Rings for the same odd reasons. |

Sure LOTR goes into MORE detail; and was filmed / realeased in a different manner to Star Wars; and was based on a book. Isn't that the point of comparison? The point I was making is that they are both large scale fantasy movie series that, it would appear, will be left sharing a pedestal once the entire LOTR series has been released. So which of the two giants will go down as being the greater? I suppose a part of that discussion will be "but they're not on the same pedestal...they're totally different movies". That...for mine...is nonsense. They each cater to the same part of my imagination. |
