Thanks. I'm not sure of its meaning, but Illuvatar (with an a, not o ) is the name of the God/Creator of Middle Earth.

"There was Eru, the One, who in Arda is called Illuvatar; and he made first the Ainur, the Holy Ones, that were the offspring of his thought, and they were with him before aught else was made." (From the Ainulindale in the Silmarillion.)

P.S. Pearls...

How about the Dark Lord himself. No not Dr Cheese, I meant Sauron of course.

Re: Who has the best name?

Hmm, well, he was an underling of Morgoth, and I recall that he went by the name Annatar or something of the like ("Lord of Gifts") when he taught the Elves the craft of ring-making.

Re: Who has the best name?

And in origin, I believe, one of the Maiar, the same order as Gandalf.

Re: Who has the best name?

No, not a wizard, just the same supernatural being, a Maiar, as Gandalf, Saruman were. And also, in the first age, Melian, mother of Luthien.
The Maiar are like the Vala, but less powerful. I think they are known together as the Ainur, The Holy Ones, the first creations of Iluvatar (God).
The first Dark Lord, Morgoth, was a Vala, and Sauron, Morgoth's right-hand man if you like, was a Maiar; slightly less powerful but no less dangerous.
At the begining of the third age, the Vala sent down to middle-earth some of the Maiar to guide the free peoples. The appeared in human form. (Remember, the Maiar can take on any form; Sauron appeared as a glorious Prince-like figure to decieve the Numenoreons, and Melian took on the form of an Elf so as to marry Thingol of Doriath.) They were called the Istari:Wizards. Gandalf, Saruman, and five (I think) others. Saruman, like Sauron, betrayed the Vala.
I hope that's all clear. I think I've got it all correct.

Re: Who has the best name?

The only other that is clearly named is Radagast the Brown. You have to look pretty deep into the Lost Tales and Unfinished Tales to find the names of the others.

Re: Who has the best name?

aaaaah! I see, well I've got the history on my shopping list. Altogether it'll cost me $400, so I gotta save up!

I can however confirm that ther are indeed five other wizards and I think they're all blue in colour

cheers

Re: Who has the best name?

Sydney, I really recomend getting a book called 'Tolkien and the Lord of the Rings: A guide to Middle-Earth' by Colin Duriez. It's not so much about the history of Middle Earth, but it has an excellent section all about the people and places from the three ages. Kind of like a glossary. Really useful if theres a particular person or place you want some info about.
