Just about anything at all, really.

Or even catchphrases, that sort of thing...

Since I can't move to the UK (yet!), I'm trying to compose a reasonably realistic vocabulary for characters I write that live there or are from there.

Obviously, it's all a load of crap so far, innit? I mean, I can only "inform" these stories just so well based on what I've read or seen in films and television. It's pretty unavoidable that I'm going to make glaring errors here and there in my writing, but I'm trying to avoid that as best I can.

All help with this will be greatly appreciated and acknowledged throughout my book tour, when it happens.

Cheers!

Aren't we here all day, anyway??

Thanks, Doc. this almost makes up for the "sleazy" remark, elsewhere.

Would you like a kiss too?

Cheers!

Was the link any help? I don't think it relates to the '80's specifically but slang hasn't really changed much over the years.

Re: This one's for the Brits!

Okay, compulsory British schooling goes from 5-16 but you can choose to stay on until 18 in a "Sixth form". The first year is called reception (similar to kindergarten I think) and goes from ages 4-5, then year 1 is from 5-6, year 2 from 6-7 and so on. Years R to 2 are at infant school, years 3-6 are junior and years 7-11 are secondary (although this sometimes is different.) You can leave at the end of year 11. (This is when you take O Levels) O Levels are now called GCSEs (General Certificate of Secondary Education) and you can score A* to G as a pass and then U or ungraded as a fail, although most schools consider Cs to be passes. A GCSE course usually lasts about 2 years. 'A' Level courses are taken in the 6th form and also last 2 years. The first years you take AS levels (half of an A Level) and the second year you complete the whole A Level. Most people usually take 8-10 GCSEs and 3 or 4 A Levels.
A public school is in fact a private school! You have to pay for them and sometimes I think you have to take a test to get in. State schools are free (apart from taxes) and in theory, accept children of all abilities. I hope this helps! Anythign else you want to know, just ask!
The legal drinking age is 18 and the age of consent is 16 for heterosexuals and 18 for homosexuals although I think there are currently debates about changing this.

Re: This one's for the Brits!

Yeah, one of the most bizarre things is that so-called Public Schools are actually Private, nothing like in the States...

Someone who attended a Public School could be likened with that of an "Ivy-Leager" so to speak. All in all, it is a very confusing system!

What are you working on anyway Geedub??

Re: This one's for the Brits!

The diferance between private and normal schools is private school pupils are midde-class wa**kers, the rest are real people.
Oh yeah, but we can't spell diferance

I am currently working on a novel called "A Marginal Life (Well-Lived)" which takes place in Britain (like so many of my others) and is a sort of precursor to one I'd given out links to in the past.

This one focuses on the character named Burke Wilson, who's been given a rather rough lot in life. This story covers his life from the age of seven to the time period covered in another novel (in which he plays a major role), called "The Right Girl". So far, I've surprised myself in loads of ways with how his story plays out.

My best friend is reading it as I go along (she looks at it like a sort of serial novel), and she alternately beats me or is infinitely pleased with the progression of events. (The beatings are when bad things happen to the lead character, not because I'm having her read it. )

I've reached a segment dealing with his experiences in the school system, hence the questioning regarding the way British schools are arranged. I'm hoping to avoid dropping any huge clangers in the mix, so I'm consulting my lovely and helpful friends in the UK via APFFN.

And again, I thank you all for your assistance.

Cheers!
