waters voice

What the hell happen to the voice of roger waters? Have any of you heard his live album, "In The Flesh? Is a great album (i love it as much as pulse) but waters sing awful, and the guy who sings comfortably numb sings awful too. I remember a time when the voice of waters was special(WYWH,Animals, The Wall). But since TFC something happened to his voice? the age?

What on WYWH did you like about Rog's voice? Dave sings all the good stuff on that album, cept the verses of shine on and Have a Cigar.

they meant 'shine on' i would guess. i think its wonderful vocals. roger may not be the best vocalist but his voice and style are unique and i love it to this day, though i do agree that he seems to have difficulty during shows (take one of the many WYWH or Animls tour shows for example).

I agree ! I have In The Flesh and I think it's an amazzzzing album. [Have you listened to Each Small Candle? I think it is a very souldful song]. I'm much dissapointed by Waters vocals though. I'm pretty sure it's age. Common guys, that dude was born in the 40's (1942 I think). He's over 50 now.

Yeah--even Mr. Wright shows his age a little on his vocals (at least, compared to his earliest recordings), and I think his is the voice that has changed the least. I'd say we could cut Mr. Waters a little slack! I personally think it's cool that Mr. Waters hasn't thrown in the towel and is still touring. :smile:

Sorry guys butI disagree. I think Roger Waters' voice is very powerful and live he has incredible stage presence. After all, he wrote most of the words so understands how to express those emotions.

Elsewhere in the forum you will find a discussion centred around the view that Roger's voice has actually got stronger as he's aged.

Mmmm...Interesting. I must admit that Rog has historically had trouble with his pitch. Even Rick admitted that Rog couldn't really sing in tune in the old days. When he sings Set the Controls (as seen in Pompei and other live videos), he always has to stick his finger in his ear to hear if he is in tune.

I do agree with the folks who say that his voice is distinctive. Animals and The Wall has good vocal work...but while recording The Wall, Rog had to record the vocals at a lower altitude (Super Bear is in the mountains), so he went to another studio. Pros and Cons is a good vocal performance, but I must admit that his voice has gotten a bit raspy with age.

But even DG's voice, in all its smoothness, has gotten a bit raspy over the years.

I loved Roger's singing in The Wall, I've tried many a time to replicate his whiney singing voice, but to no avail, think he practiced whining? I like how it sounds, anyways, and on Amused to Death he sort of uses it, but it does sound like he's lost that edge... pity.

Interesting how the Floydians are showing their age differently. Seems to me that Mr. Wright's voice gets progressively deeper, though it still has an incredibly clear tone to it. I will be very interested to hear how he sounds on his next album.

Same for Mr. Waters...his voice sounds rather gravelly compared to that sharp, biting voice of before, and I don't think that he is quite able to scream like he used to. It seems like he has to fight considerably in order to get into the upper register. However, I have heard (but would like to know whether or not it is true) that between ATD and ITF he quit smoking.

Maybe that will mean an improvement...?

As for Mr. Gilmour, I started PF with PULSE. So I have always been used to a bit of gravel in his voice. But he's always been able to turn that on and off at will, or so it seems. I mean, take The Wall for example, and listen to the difference in his singing in "Mother" and "Young Lust". That could ALMOST be two different people!

FYI, yhe reason Rogers voice sounds a little rough on 'Amused To Death' is that he said he was doing his Bob Dylan impersonation. Figure that one out. I guess I can sort of see it.

I happen to enjoy Roger Waters' singing voice. It fits the mood of most of his subject matter...except "San Tropez." (I mean imagine Roger using the voice he used for "Bring the Boys Back Home" while singing "...and if you're alone, I'll come ho-ho-home...")

Waters has my favorite PF singing voice, the second would be Wright. Gilmour's isn't my tone...and Mason--well, we've only heard background singing, and one slowed down line.

I love Dave's voice. Syd is a close second.
Roger's voice is perfect for songs like 'Pigs', full of venom.
