Talking Progressive Rock...

When people ask me what kind of music I prefer I always say Progressive Rock, and one day someone asked me, "What the hell is that!" I couldn't come up with an answer so I said, "Umm...i'll tell you later..."
I understand that P/F is progressive, Yes, Genesis, ELP, King Crimson, Dream Theater, Gentle Giant, Happy The Man and all my other favorite bands, but WHAT makes them progressive? What does it mean man!!!

i think of it as very serious, drawn out, synth-driven music. Jamming, to some extent, but almost like classical composing in modern day. who knows.

I say that progressive rock would be a kind of rock music that is naturally experimental and not afraid to push the envelope. Hence, a 'progression' from the norm of rock music.

Of course. That's another 'progression' from the normal 3-minute rock song.

There is a 42 minute long song on the new DT album...
...Whats the longest song you all have ever heard! That one has got to be the longest for me, it's a great song, well with DT you can't really go wrong, great musicians!

No, Dream Theater, great band, IMO, though a lot of people hate them.

Pick up a copy of Scenes From A Memory, you wont be dissapointed, kind of like Yes, Rush and P/F all mixed in a blender.

Pick up the CD for Mike Portnoys drumming, and John Petrucci's guitar playing alone!
Not to mention the excellent bassist and the excellent keyboardist...vocalist has a bit of an annoying voice, but once you listen to the album a few times you'll get used to it! Go get it now!!!

The album is a very intresting concept album, the whole thing is a play, in fact the track listing is listing goes like "Act 1, Scene 1" ect.
And if you read the lyrics, its like a play.....Well! Go get the album and you'll see what I mean.

All the "Metropolis - Scenes from a memory" album is very good! The best album of last years.

I'm not sure, but I think that concepts albuns is included in the definition of Progressive Rock. Is this correct?
