Re: Cover versions

I went to see The Floyd Experience last night- a Kiwi tribute band- and they absolutely tore the house down. I'll write a decent review of it when I'm not simply waiting for my lady to mail me the shopping list.

Re: Cover versions

Cool. Quickly though, they played Pigs on the wing, Dogs, Shine on, the entire DSOTM suite, the whole of the Wall. They also had the big round projector thing, built a wall roughly 12 by 30 on stage, which they then tore down at the end, had The Girls, wore all the appropriate costumes and played the appropriate parts (mum, judge, teacher, groupie, Pink, Evil Pink), had lasers, projections, short films of men shaving their chest, absolutely were note perfect and rocked the crowd fully. Actually, that might have to be my review. I've got this record function on my mobile which I used to recored the solos from ACYL, CN and a wee bit of Dogs. If you phone me, I can play this internally from the phone at you. It was magic. Totally magic.

Forgot to mention that Hawkwind's Interstellar Overdrive is ok - sort of. Floyd have covered a Hawkwind song too.

Bollocks!!!
I've been a fairly rabid 'Wind fan for over a dozen years and in all my time I have yet to hear a Hawkwind cover of a Pink Floyd song...although if it really does exist I'd LOVE to hear it.

and what 'Wind song, exactly, did Pink Floyd ever cover?

certainly there is some tenuous connection between the two bands through Twink the Pink Fairies drummer who played with Syd for a while as well as with Nik Turner of Hawkwind in the ad hoc band Pink Wind.

Re: Cover versions

If you want to see who's done what with certain PF songs, go to:

http://www.allmusic.com/

Make a search for your favourite PF-song (or whatever) and a list will show, telling you which artists has performed songs in which title the words of your pf-title appears. On that list, you can also see the COMPOSERS and thus eliminate the ones you don't want to see (look for Gilmour/Waters mostly)

for instance, if you search for "wish you were here"
you will see that Busters has made a cover of that song as well as: Catherine Wheel, Bill Flores, Human Drama, Wyclef Jean, Limp Bizkit, M.A.N, Kris McKay, Out of Phase, Rasputina, Seguridad Social, Mitchell Sigman, Sparklehorse and String Quartet.

(When you make the search, remember to check off "song" instead of "artist")

Re: Cover versions

Colonel Les Claypool's Flying Frog Brigade covering 'Animals' seems to be very solid...I've only heard 'Dogs' so far but its really good...About as good a cover of that song as I could conceive.

I agree that they never do justice to the original artist... but some bands do covers for sheer admiration and respect for the original artist... Don't you think...?

Cheers.
