| I've got a question for all you guitar players/techs out there. I've got a relatively new American Strat. I bought it in the spring of last year. I've played it non-stop since. I'm extremely satisfied with it. However, I've been considering some minor modifications and/or upgrades. I've come to see lace sensors in strats more and more these days. And I'm starting to lean in their direction. But I'm still a little confused. The best example I can give for the tone I'm looking for is probably the Live at Pompeii version of Echoes. Particularly the end part, after it softens down a bit with just Roger, Dave, and Rick still playing. And Dave's dropping in some sweet bluesy/jazzy riffs that God himself couldn't improve. That's pretty much the tone I'm looking for. Gold, Silver, Red, Blue lace sensors? Or maybe just some of these reissue vintage Fender pickups. Or some vintage noiseless pickups? I'd really prefer installing them myself, which I've never done. It can't be too hard, given that the guts of a guitar aren't near as complex as those of your average personal computer (which I repair very often). But before I'd start cutting, stripping, and soldering, is there anything I should know? If all else fails, I could just take the guitar and new pickups to the shop. But as much love as I have for my guitar, I'd feel better knowing I did it myself. Help? Ahh, one more thing. I don't post often. I love this forum, but I'm an observer by nature. Cheers.

| Re: Guitar Techs: Question I have the vintage noiseless on mine & am happy with them. Dave's tone is more from the effects he's using than the pickups. I would think at the time of Pompeii, (1972) he was probably using the stock Fender pickups. Don't be intimidated by installing the p'ups yourself. It's easy, esp. if you've worked with electronics & soldering before. There are many websites with info and wiring diagrams, etc.

I believe he was using the stock pickups, as well. The amp probably had a lot to do with that sound, as well. |

| Re: Guitar Techs: Question Yeah, I'm already looking into investing in some sort of Hiwatt. Their classic DR103 is being reissued, with the price to be announced. Although I probably won't be able to afford it right off. I'll be going for the 30watt, I believe. Or perhaps that 20watt mini-stack, heh.

| Re: Guitar Techs: Question I dug out my Pompeii tape and listened to the Echoes outro guitar part. It sounds pretty clean, but I'd say he had the reverb cranked. But I'd agree with Shane, it's pretty much that huge bank of Amps/speakers that they were using that's delivering that delicious tone.
