| You're right. Dire Straits. My mistake. I've never heard any background explanation of the lyrics; I just assumed it was some guy's kiss-off to his cheating girlfriend. (i.e., "your friend" is a male rival) However, I can see your point. If "your friend" is assumed to be another female then it certainly could be what you say.
