It was first rumoured that DSOTM would be re-released in a 5.1 mix in the DVD format. Later on, it became clear that it would be, instead, the SACD format. So, unfortunately, the DVD version won't be happening, not anytime soon.

Could any multichannel audio gurus clear a question up for me: Are there such thing as home theatres/surround sound system that will play both the DVD-A and the SACD format?

From what I am lead to believe, there are 2 layers on the SACD. One layer for SACD players, and another layer for the 5.1 dts which can be played on a dvd player w/ dts cappabilities and a dts capable receiver.

No no... I mean like DVD Audio discs... are there surround sound systems that will play both DVD audio discs, and Sony's SACD format discs?

Cool, thanx a lot man I've been wondering that just 'cause I don't wanna waste my money on a player that doesn't play both. Now if I can only find one that isn't across the Atlantic...

just an fyi, the DVD-A/SACD players are very expensive - up in the $1000's. Good DVD-A (and DVD players) go for about $200-250, and good SACD players go for about that much too.. look up Hometheaterforum.com or avsforum.com (HT Audio/Video forums for more info)

I've a Pioneer 45a that you can find for around 400 bucks right now that plays both SACD and DVD-A DSOTM on SACD in 5.1 is killer...and NO>>>SACD does NOT play DTS...but DVD-A does..if it's included on the disc....most do have it...And the rumor is.....that we may also see this released (DSOTM) on DVD-A by the end of the year.....

True there is no reason for SACD to play DTS..in fact...it can't. DVD-A is NOT a compressed format...it's 24 bit 96 kHz in 5.1 and up to 192 kHz in full stereo..(can be)...Also about Guthrie's statement on the two formats....he has a bunch of misinformation there. DTS is included so people with DVD players can also listen to them..... Humm..DTS or SACD redbook layer........especially the DSOTM one..where it clips throughout the whole album... |

Ummm..yes I'm aware of what and how DVD-a works....and no...I disagee on your idea of what Guthrie ment when he was comparing DVD-A to SACD sonic wise......Again, I doubt that anyone could tell the difference betwen the two formats taken into account both of them were done right.... as to clipping..an exageration maybe on the whole album..but done just like a lot of new cd's and remixes....too much compression....check it out for yourself if you have something to look at a wav file.....Rip a bunch of the tracks and look at them with something like Cooledit...... By the way...imho..the best sounding DSOTM in stereo is the new vinyl |

There is a DSotM DVD listed to be released on HMV UK's website on June 30th. What is this? The DVD-A that we heard rumors about?

No, it is some sort of "making of" with interviews, live footage from 1972-73 and stuff, check the Brain Damage website for infos.
