The Lord of the Rings Thread

Since lots of people here love LOTR (which is not a bad thing, as I am one of those people) I thought I might start a little thread where eveyone could talk LOTR to their hearts content without the utter disdain of those who hate the damn thing.

So to get this going: who thinks the films are good representations of the books?

You're probably going to get loads of people telling you this has been discussed before on so and so thread...But I'm not one of them.
I think they're a good interpretation, but the books are far better.

If I had a nickel for every time I saw a LOTR thread, I'd have 5 cents.

LOL, well they're a pretty good rep of the books. I mena imagine trying to fit the whole thing in! Movies are great. In fact I think that Jackson did a heck of a lot more with characterisation then tolkien did, he was more concerned with the world IMO

cheers

I know what you mean Sydney, the female characters have certainly got a bigger role in the films. But I don't think Aragorn/Strider comes across as well in the films as in the books. Once I'd gotten half way through reading the Two Towers, it was clear to me how important a person he is because of his heritage and ancestry, and how big a part he would play in the coming events; but I didn't get that feeling watching the films.

I was ecstatic when I found out they were doing films of the books. These were my favorites as a kid. I have not yet seen the second movie I just may wait for it to come out on dvd and then it won't be long before the third one is in theaters.

You know what I found annoying?!?! That Aragorn's sword did not feature! the one in rivendell! he doesn't take it with him. Also I thought he was fairly well devemoped, I got a sense of his heritage etc

cheers

He does. Trust me. Look again. They didn't show any of the reforging stuff or anything, but he does take it with him. I mean he even makes references to it.

they left Tom Bombadil out
they left way too much out.
they should've made each movie nine hours long & included everything.

Like three nine hour movies are possible:

1. To fund
2. To film
3. To WATCH

Good point. Also, I just don't find Viggo Mortensen to be much in the way of king material. I've seen a lot of people with that kind of noble air that you can really react to, but he doesn't seem to have it.

I think that's just the thing. He was Strider, a seemingly scruffy ruffian, whose appearance belied his true nature, at least in the beginning. Just my take on the casting of that role.
