Question Ummagumma

when I first got this album I didn't think the studio album was very good or many other people.but on many recent listen it seems actually quite good, sysyphus when I first heard it I thought it was terible but now I think it's quite good which has now made me think all of ricks songs are flawless.granchester meadows sounded very dull but now it's sounds calm and soothing and funny(the noise of the bee/fly at the end),I always thought several spieces was good.narrow way seemmed quite good at 1st but not that good but now it seems like a brilliant sad piece of music that shows how the journey seemed good to start off with(part 1)then it gets more difficult until all is lost and he falls(part 2)and part 3 tells the whole of the story but with lyrics and sad music.GGP entrance and exit sound simmalar to flute at the begining of stairway of heaven but as for entertainment it sounded terrible and unlistenable but now it's still the worst floyd song but it's listenable and an ok song.dose anybody else think the same?

I agree... Sysyphus would work well as an animated film, don't you think? And have you noticed the weird "pict"-ish animal vocalizations in the quietest bits of Grantchester Meadows? When I first heard them I thought I was hallucinating, now they crack me up every time... sounds like Rog screaming his head off, but mixed so low you need headphones on max to hear it.

The only problem I now have with Ummagumma (after a few open-minded listens) is that the studio tracks go on too long, and the live versions aren't really their best performances... I burned a more palatable version with all the studio tracks edited down in Cool Edit and a few bootleg tracks from that same tour.

Actually, i move to nominate Quicksilver from More as the worst floyd song ever.
Just listen.
There. Told you.

Not very good? It's positively repulsive.

Imagine a squirrel that accidentally dived into an upturned lawnmower. Imagine the sickening "SPLURCH" noise as the critter's body hits the blade.
What I'm suggesting is that Quicksilver in fact sounds at least three times as disgusting and putrid as that. Plus when it's finished, you don't get a fresh delivery of meat on your lawn.

i would imagine that 'not very good' and 'positively repulsive' mean the same thing in that they both point out that its not excellent.

Yeah it sounds like that alright but with tape speed manipulations. Actually Quicksilver is nice to fall asleep to (ie when you want to be bored out of your skull).

Yeah but 'not very good' would be a kick in the head, while 'positively repulsive' would be a kick in the balls by a boot made of lead. There's less power in 'not very good', and i don't feel that phrase covers this particular song with quite enough slant on the horribleness.

I actually think quicksilver is quite good it just some gentle keyboarding, nothing more apart from about 15 seconds of strange noises and thats the only bad thing about it,I'd give it 4 stars.

I went back to Quicksilver just now, on my lovely winamp playlist...
2311 tracks in playlist, average track length: 5:00
Playlist length: 193 hours 11 minutes 52 seconds

Anyhoo, I went back to Quicksilver to see if it does have any good points at all. After all, I am a fan of early Zappa tapeloops which have a vague similarity in concept.

But no, essentially, all i can here is some rumblings, strange noises, and seemingly Rick Wright attempting to play Careful With that Axe Eugene before realising it's the wrong song, and instead slowly making disjointed improvisations.

Five minutes into it now... still more of the above...
Six minutes...
Seven minuzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzz zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzz OH MY GOD, WHAT THE HELL IS THAT...
Oh, right... it's "Tantalising Maggie" by the Nice.

***

I apologise for the melodrama, but i can't stress enough how boring and rubbish the song sounds to me. Perhaps it makes sense in the film.
