The worst song from this era

This era is my least fave, so I thought of doing this.
What's your opinion?

Actually, "Keep Talking" shouldn't be there, in my opinion. In fact, it's one of my favorite songs from "The Division Bell". Along with "High Hopes".

I agree with The Piper, and neither should 'Lost For Words'.

I like The Division Bell, but I have a friend that likes all of 'em except 'Take It Back'. Even though I like it, I know a lot of people who don't, so that one should be up there instead of 'Keep Talking', which I consider one of the best tracks in the album, and 'Lost For Words' is ok.


As far as worst song goes, I deffinetely still don't get the 'New Machine' songs. And 'Dogs of War' has nice sax in it, and the version in DSOT isn't all that bad. I know a lot of people who trash it, and say it's a terrible rehash that's trying to sound like something from the wall. But I 'also' know people who love 'Momentary Lapse of Reason' and 'Radio KAOS', two albums that reeeeally suffered from the 80's influence. It has to do with how well you can digest 80's music.

I refrained from voting on this one, because I kinda like all those. I don't know why Dogs of War catches so much flak...not that it's my favorite, but as bertin_b said, it's got a great sax part and some good guitar riffs. And if anyone's badmouthing Dave for rehashing themes, check out Amused To Death, where Rog shamelessly uses the Grantchester Meadows songbird choir in Late Home Tonight I; and the Echos organ chords & "ping" in What God Wants III. If I was going to pick a "worst of", I'd probably pick something off ATD--there is some tepid stuff there.

So you're assuming that the sampling of mainly background sounds ('xcept for the echoes "ping") from previous records of a band you've been the guiding light to is what can make a song bad??? :-?

And don't tell me you haven't noticed the seagull noises from echoes sampled during "Is There Anybody Out There"?
Does that harm the song in anyway?
I happen to think that they help building the atmosphere.
Remember that the recording process for sound effects isn't that easy, so if you can access some already recorded ones, than it's obvious for you to use them.

But when you rehash a melody, a guitar line, or whatever musical piece that is featured prominently in a song, that can be cricticised, IMHO.

And even if you had to compare those 2 albums (even the sum of both!) to ATD, tey wouldn't stand a chance...

Excuse me, "Which", but the thread is "Worst song from this era". The Forum is "Us & Them--1987 until now." My assertion is that Roger is either "Us" or "Them". Therefore, I think there is some bias in the choice of nominees for worst song----they're all Dave Gilmours. That's my main point....OK?

Also, you're overstating my point about reuse of background effects...I don't believe it makes a song "bad"; It doesn't make any difference to me. I know it's done more than once in the Floyd catalog.. Again, I just sense a double standard here.

I'm also not aware of what guitar riff Dave rehashed. But since most songs done with guitar are in like E, A or G there is going to be some duplication of tones, chord progressions and note sequences. So I disagree with you on that one, I think it would be easier to collect sound effects.

Finally, I DO like ATD as a whole. It's sum is far greater than its parts. While it has some good melodies, Becks guitar parts are scattered...almost like an afterthought. After all, we can't have a lowly guitar player upstaging the sacred lyrics. Songs like "Perfect Sense I", or "Late Home Tonight I " or "What God Wants II" would seem lame standing on their own out of context. Therefore, I think they should be included in the Poll.

I have to agree with Stratman on this one. TDB is a fantastic album and AMLOR is a collection of good (sometimes very good)songs.

After viewing the results I was surprised that Dogs of War was winning, it is my favorite of all the one's posted, but let's be serious, none of them are exactly great.

I can't vote for a worst song here, because I enjoy both AMLoR and TDB.

If you want to hear something REAAALLY 80's, try Identity--KAOS doesn't even reach THIS level of 80s-itis. But then, I have a highly unusual liking for 80's music. The reason (in part)--that was a good time in my life. So there are good memories attached to a certain sound, if you know what I mean. Music has a way of doing that, doesn't it? But Identity (unsurprisingly) has definitely grown on me.

Uh no, I am just tired of an unwavering dedication to a band that is way past its prime. I mean High Hopes is as good as at least 90 percent of the stuff that Rog wrote and Learning to Fly is above average, but other than those two gems, there is not much real good music from the post-Waters Floyd. Then again there's not much good music from the post-Floyd Waters either.
