Re: Which is better Animals or Meddle?

I'd definitely say Animals. Meddle has got Echoes, one of the best Floyd-Songs ever. And the intro One Of These Days is also pretty good, but the other three songs... they aren't something special.
Animals is much better as a whole album. It's probably the best album concept from PF. And on Animals, there's this great guitar work of Gilmour.

I've just recently got into the wonderful world of bootlegs.

The live performances during the 1977 'In The Flesh' tour are awesome. Dave's guitar work is much more free-wheeling and inventive than on the studio albums (Animals & WYWH), and with Snowy White there playing with him, it's a Floyd/guitar-lover's dream-come-true. I especially love SOYCD part 8, where Snowy's Les Paul tones blend with Dave's Strat in one of the great jamms of PF history.

The vocals are rougher, cause Roger & Dave are obviously going hoarse from the grind of the tour, but it's also charming, 'cause a couple of times they screw up the lyrics and break out laughing together. It makes one feel that there was a time when the two of them actually got along well.

Re: Which is better Animals or Meddle?

I'd put it in as the outro solo to PotW1. Extend it just a bit and let it fade out into the intro of "Dogs".

Re: Which is better Animals or Meddle?

I like Animals better, more orignal..
Although, I love the song Echoes

BTW....With the search feature, I would use, but I feel terrible bumping old topics up. I've been to forums where if you bump an older topic up, you can be banned or giving a warning if do so. This site is awesome on how leanant it is on that rule..

What exactly does the cover of Meddle symbolize anyway?

Re: Which is better Animals or Meddle?

To quote Nick Schaffner:

"Meddle's physical appearance is also far less striking than that of its predecessor, and evinced little of the care and imagination that would go into packaging DSOTM and WYWH. Many fans are still unaware that Bob Dowling's cover photo, which looks at first glance like a random shot of a psychedelic blob show, actually depicts an ear picking up waves of sound, represented by ripples of water. Meddle remains Storm Thorgerson's least favorite of all hipgnosis Floyd album designs, though he demurs that the concept was essentially dictated by the band. His original suggestion, vetoed by the powers that be, had been a close-up of a baboon's anus."

That definitely would have been better.

Re: Which is better Animals or Meddle?

I voted for Animals for 'Dogs' and 'Sheep'. Echoes rules as a song, and OoTD(IGtCYitLP) is also a classic, but song-for-song, lick-for-lick, Animals can't be beat!

Re: Which is better Animals or Meddle?

The very first Pink Floyd Album I ever got was Dark Side. A very good friend gave it to me on my 14th birthday. I really enjoyed it but because I heard Money, Us adn Them and Time so much on the radio I felt the album was just another "commercial" rock band out there.

The next Pink Floyd album I got was Animals. I bought it myself and listened to it with fresh ears. I was so different, in my assessment, from DSotM that I feel I first really discovered what Pink Floyd was all about.

Dogs is one of my faves to this day. Pigs on the Wing changed my life....

Re: Which is better Animals or Meddle?

animals - five songs that blend seamlessly and effortlessly together, the middle section being as close to perfect as you can get.

meddle- six songs- two fantastic, two good, one mediocre, and one which really shouldn't have been considered for any floyd album.

Re: Which is better Animals or Meddle?

The search facility isn't very efficient!

I searched for tears pink floyd (has pink floyds brilliance ever brought tears to your eyes?)

guess what came up as a suggestion?... something along the lines of - whats Dave Gilmours best solo?

Anyway, Meddle is far superior to Animals because basically it sounds better, also the lyrics are wonderfully ambiguous compared to Waters self-indulgent dreary lyrics (and nasally vocals) on Animals. 'Echoes' alone is better than the whole of Animals, I think a lot of Floyd fans would echoe this sentiment.

I base this on a choice of listening to all of Animals or just Echoes (maybe twice) if you had a spare 50 minutes to fill.

A 23 minute album would be ridiculous. (to avoid argument)

Re: Which is better Animals or Meddle?

I enjoy Meddle, mainly because it reminds me of a period in the band's lifetime where everyone had equal power, and there was no big disputes and everything. While I do enjoy Animals a lot, Roger comes through a lot more creatively then the others, and I can't tolerate his cynicism for a whole lot on that album. If I had to choose between spacing out for 40 minutes or listen to an economic critique for 40 minutes with some neato guitar solos, I'd rather space out!

I can't help thinking this isn't your reasoned opinion.
