I have a Philips DVD that died like that. It would only play very few CD's and DVD's. At random points, it would start working then stop working for the next week.

....

Strange

By the way. Those of you who don't wanna wait for the SACD vs. DVD-A fight to end, Pioneer do a great DVD player that plays both. Check it out on their site. Seriously considering one myself

Re: New 30th aniversery dsotm

I don't think I've ever even seen an SACD player (what are they supposed to look like? How do I tell them apart??), so I just play mine like a normal CD...I simply don't get why they invented such thing, and nobody's been able to tell me anything solid about it, as in why is it supposed to be superior...
...I like the new cover, but the old one was much more powerful as a symbol. Fair enough, the new one is a modern expression of the old one, since they obviously aim to sell to the new audiences...I love the booklet, though...

They look exactly like normal CD/DVD players. Matter of fact you can buy a Sony DVD/SACD player with speakers and all for 500/600 €.

Re: New 30th aniversery dsotm

Can anyone suggest a good Sony SACD/DVD player? I've got a Sony DVD/CD player now and am happy with its perfromance but wish to play my copy of SACD DSOTM. So, I am willing to upgrade my perfectly functional player so I can play 1 (one) single SACD! Suggestions please.

Re: New 30th aniversery dsotm

So, what's the big differene with a normal CD player?
I don't think I should get an SACD player, I mean, I think I have enough CD players (there's the big radio, the car discman I use in my room, the normal discman, the PC CD drive, the CD radio on the car, and my Playstation); and all the people I've asked, tell me that there's nothing special about SACD...

SACD sounds more like vinyl, but it's on a CD.

Re: New 30th aniversery dsotm

And that's supposed to be good?
I don't think any of my vinyls sound better than a CD...worst, I'm afraid.

Re: New 30th aniversery dsotm

If you ever heard a clean vinyl record through a high end receiver, then play a tinny sounding CD, you'd understand. Don't get me wrong, I have lots of CDs. I listen to them everyday. But I miss the deep rich sound derived only from a vinyl LP.

Vinyl is richer and warmer. Much better sound, under ideal conditions.

Re: New 30th aniversery dsotm

Oh...well, most of my vinyls are quite old, and I only have one radio with record player, so i'm guessing those aren't the ideal conditions'...I don't feel the need right now to get me one of those.
Maybe later, when I grow to feel the urge to appreciate music on that level (in other words, when I have more money).

Re: New 30th aniversery dsotm

Botley had already described why this is the case in another thread. Which I already knew, by the way, and I'd tell ya why, but I am lazy, so either wait till he comes back, or use the search function.

Or do neither, I don't care.

A CD player plays stereo, SACD is surround sound

Yes, that's the biggest difference for the listener. I suppose.

Re: New 30th aniversery dsotm

SACD *can* play surround but there are also 2.0 mixes. Every 5.1 SACD can also but downmixed to stereo on your home equipment. To people wondering what it is, it just sounds better than CD. If you'd really love to hear PF clearer than you have before this is the way to do it.

CD Frequency response - up to 22kHz
Vinyl - mmmm around ~30kHz, each setup is different depending on conditions of vinyl/toner
SACD/DVD-A - just under 100kHz

Simply put if you think CDs sound fine then stick with it. If you'd like to hear more, comparable to going out and hearing a live performance at a concert hall, then spring for SACD.

I'd wait until September to buy an SACD player. There are a buncha rumors concerning an SACD II format. Personally I'm waiting for some official statement to be made before I buy a player.
