SACDs and Digital Decoders

SACDs are awesome, I recently bought the Sony DAV-C990 system which plays CDs, DVDs, and SACDs. I got it for about 600 bucks after a rebate, and it sounds awesome, 600 watts, its top of the line unless you want to put your own system together (basically top of the line for Sony).

I can also explain why some SACD players won't play the SACD track on the new Dark Side. Originally, Sony patented a decoder for the 5.1 format called "Digital Dolby Surround Sound." More recently though, a separate second decoder for 5.1 was released independently by like, the Motion Picture Association (or whatever its called) called "DTS." DTS, although becoming more common now, was not very common say a year ago, and of course, Dark Side's SACD format uses the DTS decoder. I believe some SACDs use Digital Dolby, but my impression is that somehow DTS is better for music than Digital Dolby is.

It is also true that there are SACDs that are not in surround sound. SACDs make it more possible to mix onto a CD like format in surround sound, but their quality in regular stereo is unmistakable. I know the majority of the Rolling Stones catalogue has been mixed onto stereo SACD, and I believe they are in the process of being mixed into 5.1 as we speak.

SACDs

To clarify a bit, if you want to buy a machine capable of playing things in 5.1 including Dark Side of the Moon and various DVDs, you will want to buy one that is compatible with SACDs (Which stands for Super Audio Compact Disc) and has both the Dolby Digital and DTS decoders. It will probably also have a decoder called Pro Logic or Pro Logic II, but those are more for the stereo tracks and if you mess around with things enough setting them to turn regular CDs into "Pseudo-surround sound." Most SACD players you get now will have both decoders. There are companies also manufacturing DVD-A players, which is a similar concept to the SACD, but the specifics are different.

My advice would be to go with the SACDs, as the trend seems to be heading in that direction. I haven't heard of SACD IIs, but I wouldn't say its impossible. But I think there is still a bit too much controversy over the success of the SACD concept.

Not all SACDs are "hybrids" like Dark Side, some won't play in regular CD players at all. The hybrid is a newer idea. It has two separate tracks of information, one for a CD player and one for an SACD player.

I could see this being confusing and ridiculous, but from personal experience I think its worth it.

Re: New 30th aniversery dsotm

It's hard to imagine how miniscule the total knowledge about SACD is on this thread and apparently this forum. It causes me great glee to talk down to the two chauvnist geniuses who's technological egoes are as bloated as the airship Hindenberg, and proably on the same flight plan!-!

SACD has been a format for 4+ years now. It was stereo only for about the first 2 years. Then Sony started selling multi-channel players.

SACD players's don't use Dolby Digital or DTS processing for SACD per say. SACD discs can play as many as three ways. The SACD layer will always have a stereo program. If it's a M/C disc, like DSOTM is, it will also have a seperate M/C program too. If it's a hybrid disc, as DSOTM is, it has a CD layer. BTW, the CD layer is on the top. The SACD layer is below it.

Class, class, class, shuuuuuut up! Thank-U. So, a hybrid M/C disc, like DSOTM, will playback 3 different ways. Single-layer stereo or M/C SACD's only play in SACD players. Hybrids will also play in most CD players.

SACD can only be played out through the analog ouputs of players with the exception of the Pioneer DV-47Ai which has a digital link that only works with the Elite VSX-49's proprietary input. So far, all other players use 5.1 analog ouputs, which can be routed into the 5.1 inputs found on most head units, or you can use a stereo pair for stereo SACD.

DSOTM is one of the most intresting SACD's released yet out of the 1000+ released worldwide. It's got three-way play and sounds muy excellente any way you play it. The CD layer does sound better than previous CD releases. The stereo SACD program sounds on par with the vinyl, half-speed mastered record I have. The M/C SACD progrm is a permanent fixture in my 5-disc SACD changer. I never take it out, what's that tell you...? I even bought a second copy for my other players...

Hey chavinist boys, do I seem like a ball breaker? That's because I am! Live with it! I hate to say it but estrogen is the force and the power in the universe!!!!!!!!!

I cheated and used ESP, so I knew, sorry! It's a hell of a thing when women have to explain tech-inosis to men.

On the contrary I think she comes across as very modest.

Oh yes you're right. It's hard for me to think, what with all the universal estrogen zipping around.

Your wife is probably too busy ruling the universe to care much either way.

She does seem a bit distracted these days and I've noticed a strong smell of estrogen wafting about.

Re: New 30th aniversery dsotm

By the way, wouldn't 'tech-inosis' be an inflammation of the tech?
