Re: New 30th aniversery dsotm Hi everybody, I don't usually barge in on forums like this, but there's a lot of misconceptions about sacd and dvd-audio floating around, on both sides of the Atlantic. And yes, I'm also a member of the HTF (hi Rachael!). By the way, I'm a "bloke" so the testosterone will balance out that other stuff. I'm a fan of dvd-audio myself and luckily, unless EMI lied, DSOTM is also going to be released on dvd-audio. That way you'll be able to play it on your regular dvd-video player and be able to hear the surround mix (as long as you have a system with at least four speakers--you wouldn't even need a center channel or subwoofer. If you don't have these, you just program your system for "no sub" and "no center"). This is because dvd-audio discs--in addition to the high quality dvd-audio tracks--contain Dolby Digital and/or DTS tracks for these people and for people with dvd-video players in their cars. And most dvd-audios have traditional stereo mixes on them too. If you have a dvd-audio player, then you have to have all six speakers to hear this high quality format properly. I guess the dvd-audio people don't want anyone hearing half-ass sound! And dvd-audios almost always contain video bonus sections, & PF definitely had some visuals that are interesting to experience. Here's a dvd-audio FAQ page. Here's some dvd-audio reviews. [t]

Re: New 30th aniversery dsotm Well, you're post looks like you've got some expertise in this subject, but I regret to inform you that actually, DSOTM 30th is a CD/SACD hybrid format. I tried playing it in my DVD player, which will pretty much play anything you shove into it, and it doesn't work, because you need one of those new-fangled SACD players for an extra 200 bucks. I was excited to originally find out that EMI seriously considered releasing it in DVD-Audio, and hoping that they might have a video track too, or something, but then they stunned the world by releasing it in that SACD thing. So, I guess you're partly right, but only historically. I don't know what DVD-audio disc you're talking about, but if you know of one, speak up! Last edited by doctor_how : 07-30-2003 at 10:40 AM.

Re: New 30th aniversery dsotm Yep, I'm aware that DSOTM eventually changed to the sacd format. But Dr. Mark Waldrep, the owner of a major dvd-audio production house (AIX Records), was told by EMI that DSOTM would be released later in the dvd-audio format also. Read about this on this HTF thread. [t] Last edited by Taurus : 07-30-2003 at 02:11 PM.

Re: New 30th aniversery dsotm How does it sound? I heard that while the vinyl version sounds pristine and flawless and is the best engineered version to be generated on the face of the earth, it's from a 30 year old master tape, so it sounds a bit flat.

Re: New 30th aniversery dsotm Hello all, I recently got my SACD/DVD Pioneer player, and dropped the DSOTM sacd into the player. It sounds amazing, but am I the only one having/noticing this one problem...? It occurs in "Money", at both ends of the song... in the beginning, I hear most of the coins, but I don't hear the register/receipt sounds, and at the end, I hear most of the voice, but again there's a problem, where I don't hear the woman speaking ("crusin' for a bruisin'"). I have checked and rechecked my equipment, everything looks to be set up correctly, and to reiterate, everything else sounds fine -- indeed, better -- so I am stuck scratching my head. However, based on my web searches, I seem to be the only one having this issue. I am trying to track down whether it is a technical issue or a disc defect, or something. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
