| From the horse's mouth (Gilmour): When people say they hear Pink Floyd in a group like Radiohead, I don't really see it," he says. "It must be a burden for those poor boys being referred to as the next Pink Floyd -- they deserve to be their own Radiohead. I think we've always stood out in our own category. I wasn't a big fan of most of what you'd call progressive rock. I'm like Groucho Marx: I don't want to belong to any club that would have me for a member. We've always plowed our own lonely furrow. Well, not so lonely, really," he admits with a laugh. "It's been well worthwhile." |

| Flaming Lips: This band is (in my opinion) very Floyd inspired, but its only about a 10%-ish thing, not every song or anything. I really love the Lips and see a truck load of originality from them, as with bands like Queensryche that play "Silent Lucidity" and make it sound like a cross of 'Comfortably Numb' and something from A Momentary Lapse Of Reason. I cant name another band that does this so plainly and succeeds like Queensryche did with it. But thats just my friendly two cents. Radiohead: Same goes for this band. Very original, very fresh, I dont personally own any albums and have never heard anything that caught my attention by them other than an original spacey sound that appeals to todays music lovers and acid heads. This band has many good things ahead of them and I wish them well. Sigur Ros: I can see why these guys were brought up, but I cant see any strong relation between the two other than the whole experimental and emotional musical aspects. Sigur Ros is one of the most creative and emotional bands I have ever heard, especially on today's crap-rap and whore-pop mtv marketing tally. Its just really nice to see bands doing things for themselves, not trying to appeal to anyone but themselves. I love this band!!!!! these are the three bands i think relate to PF a little, but thats just me. feedback? anyone like Tribes of Neurot? |

| Oh, by the by, there was this band on campus at my school last year called Irate. They did all instrumental stuff... three-piece band. Must of their numbers went on for at least ten minutes, and they sounded a good deal like Meddle-era Floyd. I don't suppose anyone will ever hear from them again, but I have five mp3s if anyone wants to come by my house and hear it in person. So to speak. |

| Hawkwind 30 years ago PF and Hawkwind were constantly compared and were about as popular as eachother. Then PF had DSOTM and the notoriously anti establishment and spaced out Hawkwind took their record company to court and were blacklisted like anyone silly enough to take legal action against their record company. Hawkwind's ace was the completely insane but brilliant Robert Calvert - poet philosopher, would be revolutionary, playwrite and architect of some very cool concepts running underneath his often tongue in cheek songs. Unfortunately Calvert had breakdowns, often mid tour and the tour bus would have to drop him off at mental hospitals for a rest..... Bob would leave the band and come back whenever he felt like it. Bandleader Dave Brock has a good eye for talent and Calvert always got much deserved star treatment. Calvert went into music when he realised poets made no money and almost noone would read poems. So he simplified his concepts and joined HW as a singer/ performance artists playing the roles of characters in his songs. Famous Calvert incidents. During a period where where he had left the band they were in the dressing room before a gig and there was a disturbance outside in the crowd waiting for the doors to open so the band sent a roadie out to see what was going on. The roadie reported it was Bob, short back and sides, a conservative suit and a megaphone telling the crowd that Hawkwind were no longer the peoples band, they had soldout and that Dave Brock was an evil sellout millionaire out to rip them off and that the band were as evil and money driven as the most brazen pop singers etc. Then he ducked round to the stagedoor, was allowed in, greeted everyone happily, asked if he could do the gig, the band said 'of course' and the guy out front trying to wreck the gig was now the lead singer. The crowd must have thought the performance outside must have been some very groovy and cool part of the show. It wasn't. Other incidents scared hell out of the band. On one tour Bob began to believe his stage roles. The band became slightly nervous when Calvert stopped getting changed after the gigs. His characters onstage included a fascist (nazi outfit with luger), Hassan I Sahba (Bin Ladin's hero) and others. This left Bob in Nazi outfit, luger, arab headress and flying goggles (standard Hawkwind symbolism). He began to believe he was a leader of a political movement and that the gigs were political rallies. The situation became worse because of the interest of political nutters like The Black Panthers and other loonies encouraging Bob. They kindly exchanged his fake Luger and machine gun (supposedly) for real ones. This was too much for the band and they piled into a Mercedes and shot through. Calvert chased after them and the locals in the French city got to see a bunch of long haired freaks cowering in a Mercedes at some traffic lights as a very respectable military type tried to break the windows of the car. France was in the middle of terrorist attacks and the locals panicked and fled. Little did they know the loony was the guy they thought was the good guy. I would put albums like "Quark, Strangeness And Charm" "Hall Of The Mountain Grill" and "Warrior At The Edge Of Time (despite its Moorcock spoken word pieces)in the front ranks of rock albums. Calvert died in 84 from a heart attack. 70's Hawkwind albums are a safe bet and the Calvert ones are very cool. From 79 till the present their outfit has done some good things but most of it is just fairly standard space rock. The classic Hawkwind sound is built on a foundation of solid drums and base, rocketing guitars and with layers of synthesiser, horns and violin but being a bunch of ever experimenting nutters their sound can vary wildly. If anything I love Calvert more than Sid. He was more intelligent, had an incredible grasp of history and a sophisticated worldview and a breathtaking view of the future. At present the often derided Hawkwind "spaced out hippies" are beginning to assume their rightfull space in rock history. Even John Lydon acknowledges he loves them and of course PF. Calvert has a German documentary about him on the way, The BBC is supposed to be doing a Calvert/Hawkwind doco and muso's are pushing their cause pretty hard.
