I have analyzed this very thing - why is rap & hip hop classified as music when there is a glaring absence of melody.
I know why people like it, people like thrash & D-Metal because they can feel the sonic waves(deafening volume) and it's "their thing"(microculture) - & it's the same deal w/ rap & hhop.
Still to me, the term "music" implies melody.
