Popular music

Anyone ever notice that most popular music technically isn't music? I mean c'mon, rap is definitely not music, and pop doesn't have much musical value. Even back in the 60s, Pink Floyd was much more musical than The Beatles but we all know who was more popular. Anyone have any thoughts on why this stuff is so popular?

Pink Floyd much more musical than the Beatles? What makes you say that? Who is the most musical?

So what's the definition of Popular Music? I would say Pink Floyd are quite popular around here which would therefore mean that they make Popular Music and so by your argument it isn't 'technically' music at all.

Music is any sound constructed for the express purpose of aesthetic appreciation. If you want to get technical, the Beatles used far more harmony and melody than Pink Floyd, as do *Nsync. So if you want to make a scale of 'musicality,' Pink Floyd would be much less musical than most other stuff.

Maybe as far as vocals go, but music went on for centuries without any vocals. Pink Floyd arranged true compositions of real music that was complex and original. They didn't have to rely on some grown man singing soprano. They relied on their incredible musical genius.

Can you make me a scale of musicality? I have some scissors and a toilet roll tube if that's any help?

LoL

And popularity has nothing to do with anything. Pink Floyd's DSOTM sold more than any Beatles record.

When exactly did music go on for centuries without vocals? Do you mean back when Mozart was writing opera? Or when Handel wrote 'Messiah'?

Anyway, I really don't see what point you're trying to make. Things like 'musical genius' is far from objective, but I get the feeling you're going to argue with me anyway.

But the Beatles had sold more than a billion records, tapes, and CDs as of 1985.

Anyway, music is music - popularity has nothing to do with it. Avril Lavigne is quite popular, and I can play some her songs on guitar - that's music. Her songs have melody, chords, harmonies - that's music.

Radiohead are quite popular as well, and I think they're one of the best bands to ever exist. No-one can deny that what they play can be classified as music.

And don't get me started on the Beatles, who broke so many musical barriers that it's not worth my time to recount them. They played what be classified as 'music'.

If none of the above is really music, than I must be insane. Thanks for letting me see the light, moviemaniac07.

Yea, Ok, where did I say The Beatles were not music? Oh that's right, I didn't. HaHa. Stupid me<cough>. I only said that Pink Floyd is a more musical band, and I was concentrating more on today's popular music. I even mentioned that popular music is music, just not as musical as something that Pink Floyd would make. Sorry people, but on other message boards, people read the posts before they respond to them. I'm new here so I guess you hypocrites would rather respond based on what you thought you read. Music is music, but some musicians are better. Accept it, move on.

Wow, you found a problem in my logic. Now I can't blame you, but that is not what I meant. I was merely stating that most popular music of today is less musical than music that is not popular. I was just trying to point out that today's typical music audience is a victim of cookie-cutter crap that is simple and not very musically complex. I had assumed that since you were all Pink Floyd fans you weren't as ignorant as the normal music fan of today. I'm beginning to rethink that.
