Social Structure

Me and my friends were discussing this and I thought you all might have some thoughts. I know this isn't the same for every environment, but in my high school their are the punkers, goths, metalheads, emo kids and other rockers who hang out together. Then there are there are the rappers, preps and all others who hang together. Anyone notice how these different social structures foster extreme hate. People who may have been friends hate each other deeply just by their social class. Luckily I have not been victim of this, as my friends have not neglected me because of our separate social classes. But what do you people think about the psychology behind this? Why does this cause such hate? Just want to see all your opinions.

Re: Social Structure

Are you claiming/implying that music influences association with certain social classes (I think I got it wrong) OR

Certain social classes associate themselves more with a type of music (I think I got this right)

?

Actually, having been through high school and beyond, I must say that I don't think it much functions as a microcosm of the world so much as a bunch of teenagers spending eight hours a day together.

Re: Social Structure

Definitely. High school is a whole little social world. There is always going to have to be somebody that people will have to look down on. It doesn't have to be based on music, it can be anything. But there will always be some difference that exists that people will use as an excuse to hate someone else. It happens out in the 'real' world too.

Re: Social Structure

Hey! I thought that the Teacher's Union did away with all this hate stuff. Eliminating grades, competition and old white men out of history books should make us all love one another. Saving the Planet, Rain Forests, Hugging trees and recycling newspaper makes our High Schools little Marxist paradises, doesn't it??

I didn't know Karl Marx said that. Nor do I know any Communist state that espouses that.

What's up straters? The local Party General Secretary splashed mud over you as he was passing by in his armoured Zil?! Not too fond of the vlasti are you?!

Re: Social Structure

This will make everyone in high school hate me.

My take is that high schoolers, as a whole, are confused. It's confusing to be a teenager, because you are getting all sorts of responsibilities, but you have very little experience with the consequences of failing in those responsibilities. It is one of the greatest times of change in a person's life, and the change can be frustrating (as one is unsatisfied with physical development, mental development, emotional development, etc.) and the desire to 'fit in' is very large. High schoolers above all want acceptance, and the more exclusive they can make that acceptance, the better. Thus cliques are formed to promote the idea of exclusivity and, in order to foster the feeling of exclusivity for a purpose, the idea that one's own particular group is superior to all others. The existence of other groups is a stark implication that one's own opinions and values (re: the Group) are flawed or lacking somehow, thus animosity springs up.

High school is a time of self-discovery and an establishment of one's indentity in the world. Thus the self is tied very closely to beliefs, et. al., and a challenge to taste or respect is interpreted as a challenge to one's self.

In other words, don't worry, you'll grow out of it.

a bit tongue-in-cheek, but the Green Party seems to be the current homebase for the Commies.

Gerald: well explained. Teenage years are rebellious, and it will always be that way.

Re: Social Structure

Yeah, everyone's posts have been pretty much related to what I believe. In my school it all just seems to be related to music. But theseare just surface things. The different groups have preferences as far as literature goes, movies and basic ideas of society. These people want to belong to something. Sometimes they want to belong to something that represents that they don't belong. Others want to belong to something that keeps them high up their in popularity so that they do belong. These opposing views cause general feelings of dislike for each other.

Ok Ok. We'll let it drop, eh? To each his own!

Re: Social Structure

Sadly there is sort of a racial division in my school. You get your typical Aussies which do mix in with people of other backgrounds but then you get the wogs or the Italians and Greeks who appear to be much despised by the Aussies. The interesting thing is that everyone seems to need to live up to their stereotype. The so called wogs do a fine job of this which is what gets obnoxious. They become very normal as soon as they leave school, but inside of school they wear they kappa and all their Italia thing when the majority of them are 3rd or 4th generation Australian. I think the reason for this behaviour is the need for identity establishment. Sad really when we prolly would get along otherwise

cheers

It's there everywhere I guess.

My best-friends father wouldn't let me marry her I'm sure... because I'm not from the same community.

My grandmother would probably have a heart attack if she knew that some of my best friends are muslim.

Untill, 8th grade... and untill I grew some sense into my thick concrete head, I used to avoid muslim members of my school because they were supposed to be dirty(!) and were supposed to be violent deliquents... people to be avoided in general terms.

My room mate is SO bigoted. He hates muslims with a vengence. he's convinced that one day, a muslim will show his true colours (meaning they will stab you in the back, rape your women and loot, steal, pillage etc.). No amount of argument will convince this guy.

The world is made of strange people...
