Online trust

Whoa. Since yesterday I've been talking to this 12 year old girl online who really was cool. We liked the same bands and shared the same emotions and thoughts. Make a long story short, I find her other screen name and come to find out she is a 48 year old whore who has a webcam site(which I did not click on, it was just in her info). When I read this I seriously felt the most intense fear ever. I know she wasn't stalking me, but damn she seemed like she really was 12, as though she had committed herself to practicing being 12. Even her screen name was something a 12 year old would use. My question is, why wouls someone really be that interested in talking to a person who they knew was 33 years younger than them and really hold deep conversations with them. It really messes with your head. Well needless to say I am quite scared now but hey you people are smart I though I would bring up the topic.

It just goes to show, you've gotta be careful, hun. There are a lot of nice people out there, but there are also a lot of sickos, too.

Re: Online trust

Great topic. I really don't know how much you need to go through to trust someone online. I suppose the photos are a fairly god start but a 45 yr old could post apic of her 16 yr old daughter and so on. So you can never be completely sure unless you have talked to this person through say web cam or in person. Like me and a friend of mine talekd to a guy over web cam who was from across the other side of the world. She trusted him enough to send him her home address and now we have a pretty funky DVD that him and his friends made for us. Takes a long time before I will trust someone but there are a few peopel around here who, I'm pretty sure, are who they say they are

cheers

Yes, but some of us aren't suckers and see right through those who are pretending to be someone else. Hmmm.

Re: Online trust

With their screen name, buddy icon and mannerisma they were extremely realistic. You could not see through this person they really knew what it was like to be that age in this time.

Re: Online trust

What harm is being done, really, by someone pretending to be someone else, unless you are foolish enough to give them personal information about yourself?

Re: Online trust

I don't really care about trust on the internet, I find it as safe as real life, even in the flesh people can lie about thier identity, and often times do.

Re: Online trust

yes good point. I think the main thing is to restrict personal info in order to stay "safe"

cheers

Agreed. That has always been my policy. I don't really start investigating until there's disruption of the community going on. Brings back memories...

I just can't help but find it peculiar, when someone's posts seem exaggerated, deliberate, and of extreme unintelligence. Then their profile is mysteriously proper. Doesn't make sense you know?! Whatever.

Re: Online trust

But yeah, I've had a similar experience in the last couple of years, whereby I got chatting to this bird (this is when I was single) and we struck up, y'know, one of 'those' relationships. She mailed me photos of herself and seemed pretty cool. There was even talk of her coming over for some sort of visit to the UK. I did find it a little weird that whenever I phoned up, her gay mate (a bloke) would always be round and seriously seemed to have a stick up his arse with regards to me being on the other end of the line, but y'know, whatever. Then I just happened to be cruising some porn site for research purposes (look, we all do it, OK?) and found the photos she'd sent me. Then she started mentioning about how her baby was really ill and needed treatment and how expensive it was in the US and how much did I have in my account? Then it turned out she was married to the uptight fruit and ACTUALLY LIVED IN A TRAILER. She also managed to get herself arrested about 3 times in the few months that we talked.

The worst part was, when she finally sent me real pictures of herself, she was bog ugly too.

It happens, I guess.

Cheers!
