Idea behind Jugband Blues.?

Just wondering if when you listen to the song it feels like he's almost talking to the other members of his band. For example. "It's awfully considerate of you to think of me here, and I'm most obliged to for making it clear that I'm not here." To me that line sounds almost sarcastic like , "thanks" for pointing it out.
Another example, "I'm grateful that you threw away my old shoes and brought me here instead dressed in red." Kindof like, "thanks" for trying to change me. Any thoughts?

I think you hit the nail on the head. The "dressed in red" part I've always thought of as him saying how he was betrayed by the rest of the band, you know like when you dress someone in red for a sacrifice. It's probably the best song on Saucerful, just because you can tell that Syd knew what was going on, and in his usual cryptic way he expressed his feelings. Watching the video makes the song way creepier.

I particularly love the way the sequence on Echoes (Disc 2) works: "Wish You Were Here", and then those verses on JB... "It's awfully considerate of you to think of me here and I’m much obliged to you for making it clear that I’m not here".

Jugband Blues is a great song by Syd, it should of been longer. I like the part with the Tuba and Syd repeats La over and over again.

Yeah,one of the greatest Pink Floyd songs ever!The end of "Jugband Blues",is the end of Syd Barrett...I love it!

i always thought of that song as syd kind of getting in his last words about the rest of the band, and the fact that he clearly knew what was taking place, and that it was no longer his band anymore. it always came off as a sad, and bitter song.

Indeed, one of my favorite songs as well. "And the sea isn't green, and I love the Queen" seems like a final descent into madness, maybe Syd deciding not to care about the themes he brought out in the song. Isolation, insanity, and all of that.

Yes, and the line "And I'm wondering who could be writing this song. " too, it's sort of telling the other members that they won't have a band without him, or, not that directly ofcourse, but, after all, he was the songwriter.

Hmm...I've never thought of it that way. It seemed to me more that Syd was expressing a sense of losing control and detachment, as if he were watching himself from outside himself.

it really is a perfect song. theres so much behind it and i never thought about all that, i just liked listening to it. it really does work well in sequence with WYWH on Echoes. all of your points are really insightful or something like that. like i never thought about what it could mean, and now it just makes so much sense.

i think the whole "and im wondering who could be writing this song" is sort of what both of you said, like he's seeing himself and wondering who he is and at the same time, he's saying that without him the band wouldnt have made it this big.

i think at the part where he says "and i dont care if the sun dont shine, and i dont care if nothing is mine" is sort of his way of saying that it doesnt matter to him anymore and they might not go on without him. i guess it was sort of his way of saying good bye without them knowing it. its sort of sad that the main reason they wouldnt do away with him in the first place was because they needed him. not because he was their friend, but cause they needed his lyrics and his mind.

I recently watched the video of Jugband Blues and it shows a stoned but beautiful Syd. I believe that the image of Syd used for Crazy Diamond that Waters used during In the Flesh, was the image from this video.
