It's Over says Gilmour

Check out Brain Damage. Dave Gilmour says Pink Floyd is over. I'm not sure but this is the first time i've heard any of them state it so clearly (well apart from Roger Waters back in the 80's)

I respect him and his decision, he's provided all of us with some of the best music we are likely to hear and he is 60 years old and touring a band like Pink Floyd must be a hell of a job.

But I can't help but have this tiny resentment that he is being a bit selfish. Especially considering that Pink Floyd officially is two other guys and realistically three other guys. Isn't he just doing what Waters did and calling it quits without any thoughts for the other band members.

Plus when I see guys like The Rolling Stones, The Who etc. touring and making new albums (probably a little too much for those bands) I can't help but feel that it couldnt be that much trouble to do it once more.

I reckon im being unfair but..... DAMMIT I WANT MORE!!!!

Sorry if I'm retreading whats been said 10000 times but.... um..... the Gilmour statement is new!

Thumbs down Re: It's Over says Gilmour

Quote:
The interview, kindly translated here for us by cambridgiano, probes David about the Floyd, and also his forthcoming solo album On An Island. The newspaper is not known for embellishing, and so David's reported comments have added weight. Whilst his comments will make many fans sad, the remarks are not overly surprising. At the very least the band is retiring gracefully, and on a high from the July 2005 Live 8 appearance.
David told them: "I think I've had enough. I am 60. I don’t want to work much anymore. It’s an important part of my life, I have had enormous satisfactions, but now it’s enough. It’s much more comfortable to work on my own". And we are not talking about the reunion with Roger Waters, already considered improbable ("Roger has worked in an absolutely autocratic way in the last 20 years; he would find difficulty in being part of a democratic band"), but about the Pink Floyd trademark itself, belonging to Gilmour, Richard Wright and Nick Mason after several legal actions. They recorded two albums and played live in incredible gigs all over the world. "It’s over" specifies Gilmour."The issue about Roger is irrelevant, because even without him I don’t want to go on as Pink Floyd. I’m happy with my life. Playing as Pink Floyd is a business too big for me now. When you move as a band, all is gigantic, the expectations are enormous, the pressures very high. We have been asked to play one hundred gigs! I am fine as I live now. It was fantastic but now I don't feel like any more."

Re: It's Over says Gilmour

I doubt any amount of money is going to persuade them. Gilmour seems pretty against it unless there is another album. Waters said he couldn't work with Gilmour again. . .

Gilmour puts it perfectly really, that Live 8 was closure for the band. It was the perfect final send off.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see Pink Floyd - but the Pink Floyd I want to see wouldn't be the Pink Floyd doing a "final tour". Roger and David might have made peace, but I cannot seeing that lasting if they recorded a new album and went on tour.

Near perfect grammar in the first part, TC, but it went straight to hell at the end.

Well, I still don't believe it. It's just a publicity stunt. It must be.

Re: It's Over says Gilmour

Dave has turned into Roger of the 80's an a**hole, Roger has said in several recent interviews that he would work with Dave again, but that would overshadow "Dave's Reign" And it would diminish his ego, and as a bitter old man, he cant take that. Oh how times have changed, first Roger was the reason and now Dave is throwing his little fit. Ive said it before and will say it again, give me Snowy White any day of the week

Re: It's Over says Gilmour

Come on, I don't think that anyone is being an arsehole. David can do whatever he wants with his life, he doesn't owe us anything. Pink Floyd are history now and a brilliant one. Just because we would like to hear something new from the band doesn't mean that they have any moral obligation of going back to the studio and making one more Pink Floyd record. We've got a David Gilmour solo album and there are rumours that Roger Waters will release one or two albums on his own. They are happier working in separate ways and forcing them to work together wouldn't be very stimulating for any of them. The music that could turn out of this could be a real mess.

Think about bands that have gone on and on even when there wasn't any agreement between the band members or when their glory days had passed away long ago. Have you ever listened to "Open Your Eyes" or "Union" by Yes? Any record that Black Sabbath made after the first ones with Dio? What Genesis did once Phil Collins departed (or even when Steve Hackett went away according to several fans)? I'm happy that Pink Floyd isn't following the same path.

And we've got the old records. IT'S OVER. There are new bands that are now in their glory days, let's listen to them.

Re: It's Over says Gilmour

I for one would buy and accept more easily a new "Pink Floyd" album featuring Roger, Rick, Nick and Snowy (and me a GilmourWhore#51) far sooner than the PF Mk. III we "enjoyed" in the past.

I hope Rog's opera does well enough for him - it's not all that bad for an English opera; not that I know much about opera to be any judge - to help him consider such a reversal on Dave.

In the meantime, as one APFFNer suggests, I am getting on with my life anyway.

Re: It's Over says Gilmour

What would the difference be between a (highly unlikely) collaboration between Rick, Nick and Roger and a Roger solo album? Think about The Final Cut, think about The Wall without "Young Lust", "Comfortably Numb" or "Run Like Hell".

Highly unlikely? Say "impossible".

Even if it would be very interesting to see Wright and Waters write together again.

Yeah, that would be kinda crappy. Not that the Dave, Nick and Rick formula was too good.

...seems like the wheel's spun and BDG got struck by the dice in his face;so he wants to be a man with ceramic spine ;and while Rog has publicly declared that what happened in the past was due to their childish egos;BDG still can't get that monkey of his back-And that Monkey just deposited a bag of gold in Raccons bank;vulture and the magpie were heard singing "....when my synapses in their quest for applause to focus instead on the love thats precious 2 me....".
