Any Deep Purple fans here?

Just wondering whether or not anybody else here likes Deep Purple? I think they are one of the best bands ever to grace the surfauce of the Earth! Ritchie Blackmore is one hell of a player. Anybody else like 'em?

I think they were rather good in the beginning, after the "psychedelic-progressive" period (Shades, Book Of Taliesyn and the self-titled one are not great but not bad too), Concerto for Group and Orchestra is pretty original, some say it's a load of crap but I like it; In Rock is a hell of an album (maybe their best one), Fireball and Machine Head are pretty good too, Made in Japan is, IMO, the second best official live rock-album ever (the first is Kick Out The Jams by MC5), but then they just started repeating themselves. I would just save few things on Who Do We Think We Are, Burn and Stormbringer (I love "Soldier Of Fortune" actually). I've never listened entirely their subsequent works, but the few things I heard did not impress me.

Hicks,

The albums with David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes, Burn and Stormbringer, are pretty damn good in my opinion. Good funky, bluesy rock. Also, the album with Tommy Bolin on guitar, Come Taste The Band, is sensational.

I actually saw Richie Blackmore do a five minute bit on TeleTubbies last year (I have a 4 year old OK....) It was one of thoes bits where the Tubbies get a show to pop up on their tummies and they break away to see what's going on. I saw this long haired older guy with a british accent, quite familiar looking I thought, playing acoustic guitar for a group of four and five year olds. He was playing some very nice melodies, childerns songs, for them and singing the cute lyrics with the kids. Then just as they began to cut away he slid in to the opening riff for "Strange Kind of Woman". I just about died laughing when I realized it was Blackmore.

If you've ever seen the doco 'One day in September', about the massacre of eleven Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics in 1972, then you'll know just how powerful the inclusion of Child in Time becomes over the stark photographs of the blown up helicopter (that one of the terrorists had tossed a grenade into, whilst the hostages remained bound inside) and varying other images from that horrific episode. I can never hear that song without being reminded of it. It's almost as if the innocence has been removed, you know?

"Heroes",

Mark
