Re: Top 5 Pink Floyd Albums Once again, one of those subjective threads where you pit your taste against your fellow fans! For what it's worth (opinions are like bellybuttons - we've all got one but they don't hold much water) here's my two pennyworth: 1: Dark Side of the Moon. Just the complete Pink Floyd experience for me, from the moment the vinyl first hit my turntable. 2: Meddle. Mainly for Echoes, the incredibly haunting instrumental parts... The original name for this piece - Beset by Creatures of the Deep - sum it up wonderfully. Far preferable to Looking Through The Knotholes in Granny's Wooden Leg, funny although that introduction was! 3: Ummagumma - Live Album. Controversial choice, but I love the instrumental workouts, and I'm a huge fan of Careful With That Axe, Eugene (a.k.a. The Murderotic Women). So I'm weird. 4: A Saucerful of Secrets. Set The Controls For the Heart of the Sun - sublime! 5: Wish You Were Here. I thought long and hard over this, and almost opted for one of the Live albums, Pulse. I also considered compilations, such as Relics. In the end, however, I opted for this eligy to the genius of Syd Barrett. Any opinions?

Re: Top 5 Pink Floyd Albums Good choices, but "Beset By Creatures of the Deep" and "Murderistic Women" are both alternate titles for "Careful With That Axe Eugene" (among others)...

Re: Top 5 Pink Floyd Albums I am not necessarily ranking how good I actually "think" these records are, but rather how much I would enjoy listening to them at this point in my life. 1) Piper at the Gates of Dawn. In my early Floyd listening days, I loved long drawn out instrumentals and lyrics modeling social commentary of a sort. However, most recently I have been interested in psychedelic early 60s developmental rock n'roll with jangly guitar, bizarre lyrics, and slightly poppy overtones. An example would be "Nuggets II". 2) Saucerful of Secrets. Since I became more enthralled with the work of Syd, this record became a lot more appealing to me as I realized how the band was really trying to pull it together in order to maintain that same psychedelic charm but exercise their own creative individuality. I think their closest achievement to a Syd-like song would be "Corporal Clegg" which has always been one of my favorites of theirs. Also, "Jugband Blues" is more haunting and beautiful each time I listen to it. 3) Atom Heart Mother. I have never owned this record, but I have listened to it maybe five times. To me, it seems like a moment where they were completely happy with their experimentation, and while it may not have been entirely developed, for a minute they were just chilling making really good out there music while being comfortable for a little while. 4) Dark Side of the Moon. A few months ago I had a run in with a neighbor after I had been tripping all day long. I said, "here eat some of these" and she and I laid on my bed and listened to this record. "As long as I listened to this record as a kid, I finally get what it's supposed to feel like." 5) Animals. My first anxiety attack happened while I was driving to school at 8am, very stoned, on the highway, tripping out to "stone...stone...stone...stone...stone...stone..st one" and it was another one of those "wow, I knew Floyd was supposed to be a 'drug' band, but now that I am on drugs, this music is tripping me out to frightening levels.

Re: Top 5 Pink Floyd Albums You're correct, of course... (although I'd claim it was "Murderotic Women"!) But the "...Creatures of the Deep" title fits Echoes so much better than "The Return of the Son of Nothing" - wouldn't you agree?

Re: Top 5 Pink Floyd Albums Oh yes. One of the things I like best about the song (and, indeed, the whole Meddle record) is how it explores the primeval origins of humanity as a metaphor for personal growth. Pink Floyd were always at their best lyrically when exploring that inner journey in a literate, artful way. "Son of Nothing", though humourous, would rather undermine that!

Re: Top 5 Pink Floyd Albums That's an impressively deep interpretation... But of course Roger did once have John Peel announce the song as "A poignant appraisal of the contemporary social situation" - I have that comment on one of my bootlegs!

Re: Top 5 Pink Floyd Albums Haha. Yeah, I think that was supposed to be in (sarcastic) reference to "One of These Days", which is pretty funny considering the lyrics. Last edited by Botley; 03-13-2010 at 12:08 PM.
