Here's the lyrics if you want to read over them before stating your opinion... I've got a little black book with my poems in I've got a bag with a toothbrush and a comb in When I'm a good dog they sometimes throw me a bone in I got elastic bands keeping my shoes on Got those swollen hand blues. Got thirteen channels of shit on the T.V. to choose from I've got electric light And I've got second sight I've got amazing powers of observation And that is how I know When I try to get through On the telephone to you There'll be nobody home I've got the obligatory Hendrix perm And I've got the inevitable pinhole burns All down the front of my favourite satin shirt I've got nicotine stains on my fingers I've got a silver spoon on a chain I've got a grand piano to prop up my mortal remains I've got wild staring eyes I've got a strong urge to fly But I've got nowhere to fly to Ooooh Babe when I pick up the phone There's still nobody home I've got a pair of Gohills boots And I've got fading roots.

Partially, yes. Much of Pink's experiences in The Wall are based on Syd's life. Check out Roger's commentary on The Wall DVD.

I think some of it involes being sent to some sort of phsyceatric hospital after Pink tries to kill himself. As you can see, the stuff about elastic bands and spoons on a chain would be the kind of thing you would have there, so you couldnt do it again. And the pomes, a small (i predict) bag with his toothbrush and comb, would be the only things you got when your alone in your room. It's all got it in there. I think the lyrics were writin with alot of diffrent views in it rather then just one.

I think I read somewhere that the lines 'I got a silver spoon on a chain. I got a grand piano to prop up my mortal remains' was a reference to Rick Wright. I may have imagined that though.

Nick Shaffner supposes that, but says that Rog will only comment this on the song, "It's about a lot of people I've known." The obligatroy Hendrix perm was a blunt refernce to one of Syd's frakout sessions just before going on-stage, and "when I pick-up the phone" is a refernce to Rog's own failings with his wife. The thirteen channels may also be arefernce to Syd's supposed hobby of watching more than one television at a time.

roger said that syd was the only person he knew that used elastic bands to keep his boots on, so there you go, i guess

"There's some lines in here that hark back to the halcyon days of Syd Barrett - ye know - it's partly about all kinds of people that I've known. All this is about all sorts of people I've known. Hey, but Syd was the only person I ever knew who used elastic bands to keep his boots together, which is where that line comes from. In fact obviously the "Obligatory Hendrix Perm" you know, you have to go back ten years before you can understand what all that's about." -Roger Waters

The 'silver spoon on a chain' is a coke spoon, so I hear. And this line connected to the line about the piano makes me think of Rick Wright. BTW, these boots with elastic were also called Gohill's boots - made by the London outfitter of the same name. Quite a few people of the underground era dug them. Syd's pair was yellow.

Yeah, but I'll bet they were never as popular as Anello & Davide's Beatle boots. Jay even bought himself a pair in the 90s before the company disappeared.

You didn't contradict me. The scene just gives you the impression that he is in fact in an institution of some kind.

Well then it had to have been between Pink's whole hotel stay and the events during Mother(Or half of mother should I say). The Final Cut also mentions his attempt at attempting(Heehee) suicide but not having the strength to do it. The whole thing about his 'sickness' though I think has to do with a combination of his cutting his hand and letting it bleed while soaking wet + the physical toll that stress and anxiety could give. For some reason I think it was his way of letting his life slip away with the hope that somehow things could change since there was a possibility.
