www.ToolBand.com
www.DannyCarey.org
www.AlokeDutta.com (danny's teacher)
www.AlexGrey.com (Lateralus album artist)

most of those links come from toolband.com's links page, i have yet to find a really good site on the techniques used in their music, but those links should help. if you've visited those already, just try a good search engine for 'Tool music techniques' or something like that. rock.

Re: Pink Floyd vs Tool

I think tool is pretty good. They are just "spacy" like floyd at times, but other than that, i don't really see too many similarities. I think I heard somewhere that tool liked pink floyd, but i could be wrong. I know dream theater has said they're biggest influences are pink floyd and metallica. I think dream theater sounds like a much heavier floyd, but that there are actually some similarities. But im sure tons of people will disagree with me. One thing i must give dream theater is that i think they are more talented than any other band i've ever heard. but i still prefer floyd.

hmm....maybe there should be one thread just for comparing any band to pink floyd?

Re: Pink Floyd vs Tool

okay, time for me to bring this thread back from... page three.

okay, forgive me, i always seem to have the opinion that is against the social majority, but then, when did i start giving a fudge-packed-marshmellow what society thought anyway. TO HELL WITH SOCIETY. anyway, I like TooL. I've stated in another forum that they are my Favorite band, still in existence. That means that the only band i am influenced by more that TooL is Nirvana. The floyd round out my top three.

Okay, so the thread was orriginally addressing the comparison of the two bands likenesses in their uniqueness. well, i'll go from there. They are very Alike in the fact that they are unique. They are also alike in that they could both be classified as "Intelligent Rock" Tool is the intelligent mans metal band, and PF is the intelligent mans Rock band. They both seem very dark, lyrically, and both have inspired my own lyrics, some of which, i'd like to think, are equally as intelligent and dark. They are also both very hard to find a band with whom they share a sound. A perfect circle comes closest to tool, and thats probably because Maynard James Kennan sings lead vocals for THEM TOO.

Is tool the new floyd? no, there is no replacment for floyd, who would want to replace them anyway?

Is tool the metal floyd? I think so. I think that in the metal industry tool is representative of the same musical spirit that Pink Floyd represents in the Progressive Rock industry. Intelligence.

Thumbs up listen to recent Tool

I am a little late on this subject, but Pink Floyd and Tool are my favorite two bands, so there would have to be some kind of common thread.
They also have put on the best concerts I have seen.
Intelligent, dynamic, layered, fused with the kind of energy that comes from very passionate artists.
Tool was and I am sure still are into Pink Floyd.
No one will ever replace Floyd and if Tool is still at it years to come nobody could ever replace them as well.
Anybody who thinks this topic is a waste of time has not heard Tools later work.
So does Tool sound like Pink Floyd?
Of course not.

But, to choose on who is 'better' would be unfair. Each are awesome and each show what music is all about.

I guess, I always thought Tool was darker .... I can't explain it. More heavy I guess.

i totally agree w/ both.. both PF and tool awesome and both are creative in they're own way.. but i too see tool as a darker band

Re: Pink Floyd vs Tool

Has anyone heard Tool do a cover of Comfortably Numb? Good stuff...

I would state my opinion on the matter, but I feel S_o_a_m, etc have said it the best, so I'd rather not rehash the same point.

You know what would be a perfect sound effect for that statement is a scream going from the left side of your head to the right and back, with the stereo, kinda "On the Run" style.

Maybe I should go to bed now....
Oh, yeah, in my senior English class, we studied Iron Maiden during the poetry unit.

It's called over-use of distortion.

The Foo Fighters do a great cover of "Have a Cigar"

NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER COMPARE ANY TWO BANDS BASED ON ANYTHING BUT THE INFLUENCE THEY MADE IN THEIR OWN TIME! IF YOU DO, YOU ARE MAKING A COMPLETELY ESTHETIC JUDGEMENT BASED ON NOTHING BUT PERSONAL OPINION AND YOU WILL GET NOWHERE!

However if that was your original intent, jus to make small talk, then don't listen to me.

And now back to our regularly scheduled programing...
