tape effects

I know Pink Floyd have done some experimentation with tape effects, I've even had a go myself, I was wondering if anyone here has done any experimentation with them, in my attempts I have got some very short delay, and the drone sound that you can hear in speak to me.

Re: tape effects

I've done some backwards recording, but I'm not too good at it (especially with instruments).

Re: tape effects

I fool around with backwards recording a lot, also. I have Cool Edit 2000, so it's a bit easier, and I can make some pretty trippy sounds. I only have one reel-to-reel in my possession, so I can't do the delay thing. If you have two reel-to-reels, you can loop the tape betweent the two and the farther apart the machines are, the longer the delay. So I'm assuming that 8 machines were used for the Us and Them delay. How legspin got that droning sound on his machine i'm rather interested in.

Re: tape effects

When it comes to tape effects I prefer working with Scotch Magic Transparent....The Tuck Masking keeps sticking to my fingers and usually ends up in a ball on the floor picking up lint, dust and dog hair.

My favorite effect is when I can cut out a picture of me and "tape effect" it onto a picture of Pink Floyd and make it look like I'm with them.....

I doubt it. What you can do is feed the playback head's output into the record heads input, so it is an infinite loop, sort of like feedback, but with a delay in bewteen. So it can echo for infinity. I assume that this is what they did for "us and them".

I got the drone thing by doing this feedback thing with two tape decks.

And you should be able to get delay with your reel to reel, as long as u have seperate heads for playing and recording. Connect the output into the input like I said above, and then plug ur instrument into the record input aswell and have a play. The bad part is that u wont hear any dry signal. But if u have some sort of signal splitter then that can be fixed.
